What's Your Ikea Name?

9-5-ikea.jpgIf you've ever wondered where Ikea names come from this article at A Hundred Monkeys solves the mystery (and it's a good one). While if you ever wondered where the name IKEA comes from, you simply go to IKEA's About Us webpage to find out:

The name IKEA was formed from Ingvar Kamprad's [the founder] initials (I.K.) plus the first letters of Elmtaryd and Agunnaryd, the farm and village where he grew up.

So now we can do it ourselves (more fitting than finding your porn star name, don't you think?). Unfortunately, not being Swedish, we'd be MGMNY (Maxwell - M, Gillingham-Ryan - G, Manhattan - M, New York - NY), which wouldn't sell anything to anyone.

You mean Ikea isn't Swedish for common sense?

Estelle, I thought the same thing!
Either that, or Swedish for crowd-induced panic attack.

No, Maxwell, you don't want to have another New York Times fiasco, except with Metro Goldwyn Mayer, do you?

Mine is, by the way, CAR.

WFMC, which would get me in trouble with the Workflow Management Coalition ( http://www.wfmc.org/ ) and a Christian radio station in North Carolina ( http://www.730wfmc.com/ ).

SCHT, if i use my home city and parish. could actually pass for an IKEA furniture item, if you stuck a random vowel and umlaut in there somewhere.

if i lived a few blocks down from my current place, i could finagle SCAB, if i used street and city. funny, every street i've ever lived on (not counting a brief stint in numbered manhattan) has started with either a C or an S. which are my initials.

usually manhattan, new york, is called new york, new york or NYNY. and I would have thought that maxwell gillingham-ryan would be MGR. The result would be the unweildly MGRNYNY. For the record, I'm JBNYNY, but I'm not sure what something pronounced ibkneeknee evokes.

opoponax,
SCHOT (that's supposed to have an umlaut over the O) sounds passably like an ikea item. But what would you want it to be?

My 'ikea name' is MCET, which strikes me as the name of an engineering school or something of a technical nature.

JGS(farm)W (village) wonders if they are going to mail those catalogs already?

Has anyone gotten one?

Anybody speak Swedish? If bookcases are occupations (as the article says), what does a Billy do? I have enough of them in my house; I'd like to know them better.

I've already got a piece of ikea furniture named after me, or rather, my middle name, Trygve, though i think their spelling is a swedish variety (mine being norwegian) with an extra g or v thrown in. I think I heard about it every single time a friend went to ikea after they first opened out here.

As for my IKEA....i guess it would be MTSFC; not very interesting.

I think Ikea is having a laugh on the rest of the world sometimes. I found a kid's toy called Ekorre, a small rocking moose. Ekorre is Swedish for squirrel.

When I moved into my new apartment this spring, I vowed to have no Ikea products in it. I'm in my early 30s and I felt it was more appropriate to buy fewer things, and things of quality that are made to last. I also design and make what I can.

I may not yet have everything I think I want, but what I do have is pretty great, will age well and will last.

Can I get an amen?
