Last day. Everyone who works for AT was a reader first. It is with this in mind that we are putting up this post and copy catting our favorite ice cream company (see 1994).
The time has come to find a really good, smart, fanatic person who is capable of joining our staff here at AT and helping to run operations and all that business-y stuff for the years ahead. Is this you? If so, read on...
All you need to do is submit the link to your favorite post and a 100 word essay (max) describing why you'd make a great Blog COO to...
maxwell @ apartmenttherapy . com, and please put "COO" in the header.
We're conscious that Ben & Jerry's got in some trouble for promising the first place person the job and not following through, so we're going to make a promise we can keep.
The top three submissions will get interviews for the job here at our offices (and we hope to choose one of you), and each of these three will also get a lifetime's supply of everything in the AT Store (one of every item!).
We've met so many AT'ers over the years and emailed with so many more, that we are fairly confident that we'll find the perfect person among you.
Down here is all the hard core descriptive stuff.
Our deadline is Friday, September 14th.
Bring it on!

I think it's fantastic that AT has grown into something that needs such a person, and I think it sounds like a great gig for some lucky smart person.

Too bad you're not looking for a telecommuter... :)
Good luck with the search.

Are you posting the submissions on the site for a vote? That wasn't entirely clear from your description.

Just a couple of wry observations:
-Although I am heartened that AT would seek to fill this position in such a grassroots manner, I suppose I am also a bit perplexed as to why they would fill such an important position so... frivolously. You would think they would have retained the services of a search firm or something...
-Based on the qualifications/responsibilities detailed in the description, it doesn't seem like the candidate has to have much in the way of design acumen or even a remote interest in interiors. If AT is truly sincere about opening up this position to a real AT reader (as opposed to some hack from some generic McMedia site) they would emphasize having a true affinity for high design over just having online media credentials. Come on, AT, level the playing field.

I would guess that second part is assumed.

But how, exactly, is that anything about leveling the playing field?

I'm waiting for AT's project manager posting...

I'm fascinated by hejiranyc's assumption that real AT readers don't have operations management skills.

Boo, I don't live in NY.
Here's a pitch, Maxwell: Start an AT Southeast and then we'll talk. I'm dead serious. I can help you head it up. I have a background in marketing and advertising with serious budget, personnel and project management skills. My current position requires me to be knee deep in the financials and forecasting with the owner.

@ Wende in Phoenix. I'm fascinated by your ability to misconstrue my words; I didn't say anywhere that AT readers don't have operations management skills. By leveling the field, I mean that AT should consider someone who doesn't necessarily have the professional (media) experience, but has the vision, creativity, smarts and personal characteristics that would lend itself to this kind of role- someone who has an understanding of the AT vibe, an appreciation for design, as well as the ability to conceive and execute deadline-oriented projects. I think the bottom line is that AT has thrived on the contributors' enthusiasm and sincere joy of the subject matter at hand; this should be more than just a McJob churning McProducts. By emphasizing the media experience over all else (as implied by the wording of the job description), it just makes me wonder why they even bothered to open this position up to its readership, as only a tiny minority of a minority probably have this kind of background here. I think they should have just hired a search firm.

hejiranyc:
Hiring a search firm would undermine AT's wanting to find someone that already understood their brand and mission. Who fills that role better than existing readers.
And why would you think people on this blog--aka new media vehicle--wouldn't have experience with other new media? Is it such a stretch to think there are people who read this blog and possibly have their own, as well? Or you know, work in communications?
Something tells me AT knows what they're doing. They didn't become this prolific by being dunces.
