Jason's Kastrup Chair was the result of a summer in Copenhagen. Leading us through a story-like slide show, he demonstrated the chair's gradual evolution, inspired by the simple, natural and spartan designs of Scandinavia...

smart looking, but not especially inventive. looks like a cross between a Wegner folding chair and Risom lounge chair.

How come, when an up and comer creates a piece like this, it is "inspired by" but when West Elm or Ikea are as "inspired by" Risom, screams of "knockoff!" fill the air?

(I WILL say that the integration of the webbing is really the most elegant solution on any of these types of chairs I've ever seen.)

Gorgeous chair. Any idea if it's going to be produced? ...distributed in the US?

Interesting question. though are you certain that the people who cry "knockoff" when it's west elm are the same ones crying "inspired by" when it's an up-and-comer? is the slack being cut here being given to a beginner but withheld from a professional who we presume has had time to find or develop an individual style? Would you rather the art historian's pretentious "in the style of" for both instead? For what little it's worth, I liked the chair and would be interested to see what else Culler comes up with.
