A door that promotes flow. At our 4th Meetup last week, we showcased Akira's beautiful new design that deconstructs the concept of a door. With his recent work in toy design and having won the Rachel Carson Environmental Award while at RISD, his vento door separates space, but allows for air, light and conversation to flow through...
The Vento Door allows itself to become solid when magazines are placed in the slots. A second design, the Vento Room Divider, uses the same design to stand free in a space, creating solid separation. Pictures of this are coming soon.
Akira's design is not in mass production yet, but it is available on a custom basis.

"With the division of space comes the separation of people. A traditional door, while creating privacy, also results in exclusion or isolation. This break in audio and visual communication can seem abrupt.

The VENTO DOOR functions as both door and magazine rack, making the division of space flexible. The placement of magazines into alternating perforated pockets allows people on both sides of the door to control the degree of privacy."

This looks great but... I wonder about the practical application. I am in a loft and the only two doors are those to the bathroom. Doors are used to isolate noise and sight lines in order to provide privacy.
I think these can be used to great effect in commercial environments.

I would love this, for example, in the door to my office in my apartment.

Quite lovely, but I agree with SeanG's assessment: not in my apartment.
Perhaps a quick redesign allowing one to move one of the layers of wood so the openings are eclipsed or not depending on the need? I'm not convinced that magazines between the layers completely answer the need for privacy.

I had the same thought as spanishfish - I would love to use this for the room I use as my study/office/plant room. We did this using a French door, so that one could always see if someone was working away, and also let the light from that room spill over into the hallway. But I think this would be a great alternative (and I like the light dots). Or great for the closet in that room, which would allow air flow into the closet and for me to have a place for my magazines!
But I agree with SeanG as well - so many commercial places where total privacy would not be needed and this would enhance the space and be very useful...
