This past weekend, we made our first trek out to Secaucus, New Jersey to check out the Design Within Reach Annex. Located in a sea of outlet malls, the 12,000 square foot Annex is a catch-all for DWR inventory, past and present...

We were surprised to see so many pieces that are rather new to DWR — Shaker-style chairs, etc. Some of the pieces are slightly damaged — others are really damaged — but much of the inventory is in great shape and is merely overstock, seasonal, discontinued designs or returns. Almost everything was at least 20% lower than the retail price and some was closer to 50% off.

There was a large selection of leather seating and the supply of chairs was almost overwhelming and in great condition. Since this was the end of summer, there was a lot of discounted outdoor furniture, too.

If you are in the market for new furniture and are in the New York area, we would recommend a trip. The DWR Annex is similar to IKEA in that you can't plan out all of your purchases in advance — you have to go with an open mind and see what the inventory is like on the day of your visit.

Because this is an outlet, all sales are final. There is delivery available for a fee.

Wendy - not far (assuming you are in NYC) - you can take a NJ Transit bus from Port authority -- $2.10 and a 1/2 hour ride tops. There are a lot of clothing and other outlets there, too. (The K Cole outlet staff all knwo my name . . .)

BUT, I still find most things there stretch the definition of "within Reach"!

Prices varied widely from piece to piece and the inventory changes constantly. Some pieces were a great deal...some were not. And the super deals move FAST. On Saturday, about 35 Kartell Componibli units were gone in under 2 hours...they were $65-$85 if I remember correctly.

I have found some GREAT deals at the DWR Annex (like, so great that they made IKEA look expensive), but interestingly, not during the sales. I find that the best stuff can be found before noon on Saturdays, when the store is almost empty. The sales are kind of awful, since a long line builds up outside and the store is jam-packed. Also, I've found that the staff has more time and freedom to negotiate prices (yes, you can bargain lower than what the tag says) when there are only a few customers around.

p.s. Aaron, I bought white, 3-tier Componibili there a couple of months ago (not during a sale) for $29! It had some scuffs on it, but a Magic Eraser made it look perfect.

I was one of those who bought a Kartell Componibli 2-shelf units for $65 (original price $119). It was very busy so I'm glad I was there early. It's definitely worth going to the Annex if you're in the NYC area. Luckily I live about 5 miles of the outlet store. I'll probably never buy anything full price at one of the regular DWR retail shops!

cannot get enough of the DWR outlet-- my best find ever was their Theatre sofa in limited edition "tomato" leather... $3800 down to $1200. Happy days.

I see the nakashima chairs, which even at 20% off is way out of my price range. Any chance there were any of the new salt chairs there?

Any kind soul willing to list some Neutra house numbers on ebay for purchase by someone in the UK ? (me !). DWR don't ship them internationally.....
We can't get them here :(

amt - the salt chairs are teeny compared to the Nakashima - I've tried both.

That first picture makes my head spin - I can envision my pristine white SoHo loft filled with candy colored Jacobsen swan and egg chairs....*sigh* back to reality: Boston and I have no Jacobsen furniture. :(

i just scored a lt blue leather theater arm chair on sunday for $299, originally $2100. it had a huge gash through the leather on the back, but it's going against a wall - so no one would see it anyway! even with that, i could reupholster part or all and the chair would still be a good buy!

Modfan - unless the salt chairs are 8 inches tall (20% the size of the nakashima chair to correspond to the price), the salt chair still seems like the best option for my price range. and for the city, I'm not looking for anything to fill up my space.

Was wondering if anyone noticed the ZIG DIY room divider right in the same area as the Componibili units (got the 2-shelf silver). My husband really liked it, but I was undecided. Anyone?

toomanycats - i noticed the ZIG divider too...i thought it was inexpensive compared to the majority of the products (only $100) but did not offer the value of the other products (sofas, chairs, tables...). the ZIG was for people who wanted to buy SOMETHING, whether or not it was very useful... would you agree?

Aaron - Thanks for the feedback, but no I don't agree. The price I saw was $200 (still inexpensive). Our apartment opens up right into the living room and it has always bothered my husband as a privacy issue. A neighbor had a wall built and he loves the privacy it gives. I liked the wall, but felt it made her living room look cramped. My husband thought the ZIG would be an inexpensive, temporary way to create a hallway and privacy. So in our case, it might have been useful as a determination about a permanent wall.
