This just in: New York City no longer center of world. As rents go higher (despite economic dips), and civilized people crave the country life, furniture stores have proliferated more and more outside of The City. As reported by Craig Kellog in The Times, the modern furniture mafia is moving out too. "Jonathan Gallin, a former photo stylist in New York, moved to the Catskills three years ago with the idea of building houses 'in the style of Richard Neutra,' he said. Instead, he rented an old luncheonette, and transformed it into a store called Mid-Century Modern. Mr. Gallin sells classics by Knoll, and vintage pieces, to urban refugees like Chandra North, the Sports Illustrated swimsuit model. Pottery planters in white or celery glaze start at $125." "I was just at this store yesterday, and I have to say that I was dissappointed. With nice vintage pieces in the window, most of what was offered inside were reproductions - not that interesting. More stock is needed here. Thanks for the tip, however, and will send you name of GREAT store in Hudson when I remember it."
In response to the dissapointed customer...The article was misleading because in fact I do sell current production pieces. However they ARE NOT REPRODUCTIONS! I am dealer for KnollStudio, Vitra, Cherner Chair Company, Architectural Pottery and Daniel Donnelly. It is a collection of pieces that have been in production since the year they were first introduced, as well as newly reintroduced pieces by the authorized manufacturer.
It would have been nice for the person posting that criticism to have asked about the furniture rather than make uneducated remarks.
Sincerely,
Jonathan Gallin
Mid-Century Modern
i'm with original poster...... this shop was extremely dissappointing to me. no magic.
Mid-Century Modern's new site, www.mid-century-modern.com is probably the nicest I have seen selling modern furniture!
I spoke with Mr Gallin during September and he let me know that the website was the direction of his energies going forward.
I can not comment on the store.
I love this website!
I recently bought some Knoll pieces from Mid-Century Modern and found the service to be truly excellent. Also, the prices, with the free shipping were all that I could ask for!
I think this is one of the tightest collections of modern furniture on the web. They have done a great job editing the pieces they have chosen to promote/sell!
I found the site to be extremely derivative, like so many other web-only retailers it lacks originality and seems amatuerish - like if you called to place an order you'd reach some gal sitting in her underwear in some one bed room apartment. "Hello, can I take yer ordah ? , just a second honey, I gotta get the cat off the key-board!"
I am looking for a pair of ladies chairs by Zanuso made by Arflex in the 1950's.
I would like to let anyone trying to use the website link at the top of the page, know that the new website address is www.mid-century-modern.com
Thanks and enjoy!
Cool store, reasonable prices.
This a letter i recieved. very dissapointing. do not order from this company.....
Dr. Duncan,
I wish that I had better news to give you. I will explain further, but first I need to let you know that, unfortunately the order was never processed by Knoll, and at this point I will need to make restitution to your credit card.
I got behind with my payments to Knoll and they cancelled my credit terms. I thought that the order had gone through, however they were not going to process the order with payment from me at the point of order entry. I thought that the order was being produced.
Over the past few months I have had to realize that my business was failing and as such I have arranged to get a loan to close the business without leaving any debts. The loan will be closing in about 14 days, at which time I can return your money.
Dr. Duncan, I am truly sorry to be telling you this information. I do not take it lightly and have never been in this position before. I thought that the order was being produced and that I would be able to pay for it with the loan and have the merchandise sent to you, but I was wrong. I wanted to make sure that the order was not being produced before getting back to you.
I realize that you may want to call the bank, but please know that I will definitely be making restitution within a short time frame, and please know that I am truly sorry for all the inconveniences associated with this situation.
Sincerely,
Jonathan Gallin
