1-800-Mattress

2005_8_bed.jpgThough we feel a little slutty doing it, sorta like after a McDonald's binge, we threw down the gauntlet and ordered a mattress from 1.800.Mattress this morning. This week we have our summer share to ourself and have been sleeping so poorly, we needed some relief.

We wanted a new mattress and didn't want to spend big bucks. After a ten minute phone call, a new Sealy Posturpedic (one of our favorites) is on the way and arriving TONIGHT. As we are on Long Island, 10 miles from the nearest town, we consider this a near miracle.

2005_8_22_mattress.gifTrue, we did end up upgrading our purchase on the phone. We told them the brand we liked and that we were looking to spend $300-$500. We ended up spending $472 with tax and free delivery.

1.800.Mattress was super efificient and polite on the phone, offered us a wide range of prices ($200 up) and choices (Tempur-Pedic, Serta, Simmons, Hypnos, King Coil and Nation's Pride) and then said we could test the mattress when it arrived and send it back if we didn't like it. Wow. We would be really interested in other's opinions on this one. MGR

Well, it really sounds great if you actually do already know what kind of mattress you like.

But when they bring yours, could you please ask them to change those commercials of theirs? I mean some of those people are probably grandparents by now.

Wha? Slutty?
1800mattres (I'm leaving off the last "s"... heh heh heh) rocks. Not sure where the cheap/slutty/ Mickey D's part comes in, unless you're a Shifman's-only kind of girl and sleeping on anything less than horsehair and hand-tied springs bothers you

Ummmm... I hate to say this as I've ordered from them in the past and not had a problem. BUT there are rumors they reconstitute a lot of their mattresses. And with a rather bad bed bug problem raging in in NYC, I have even been warned by Real Estate folk NOT to order through them... You may get more than you bargained for.

posted by Ninon on 2005-08-22 14:56:58

I just got a mattress from them a week ago, and I'm perfectly happy with it! I went down to their showroom on West 35th Street (there are several on the East Side) and tried out a few to find something comfortable in my price range. I'd tend to discredit "rumors" as just that... what could they possibly reconstitute mattresses from, anyway?

posted by Jane on 2005-08-22 15:27:41

I bought from them when I first moved here. I got a fantastic mattress above a platform bed with drawers--very well designed. They were on time and very good. The mattress was excellent. (I didn't know what I wanted, so I asked for "neither the cheapest nor the most expensive, but quality." Fifteen years later, my mattress is still comfortable!)

Don't know about the reconstituting problem--if that's true, I'd be wary.

Still, my own experience with them was FANTASTIC.

posted by Terry on 2005-08-22 15:28:00

I've ordered from them several times, and always been happy. The bedbug question comes up when you consider their 30 day guarantee - if I sleep on my mattress for 30 days, and then decide I hate it and return it, where does it go next? Does someone else buy it? What if I were a dirty person with fleas and bedbugs? Maybe reconstituting means, basically, sanitizing.

posted by Ona on 2005-08-22 16:02:07

I was thinking it meant that they might just unzip it, add some more stuffing, or give it a new covering and put right back on the market, but yeah that 30 day guarantee does have a potential dark side.

posted by Curtis on 2005-08-22 16:35:09

I doubt that they restuff or recover old mattresses... there are strict regulations governing these things! But you do wonder where the "tried out" mattresses go.. perhaps to some sort of outlet with steep markdowns?

posted by Jane on 2005-08-22 16:42:37

I can shed some light on where tried out mattresses go. I got a great Sealy mattress/boxspring combo for $599 from a Marshall Field's outlet (I'm in Chicago). Retail price was $2200. They had piles of them, including a LOT of memory foam mattresses. The salesman told me that returns is one of the reasons why the memory foam prices are so high, about a third of them are returned.

Didn't really think of the bed bug potential until now. But, so far so good.

posted by clint on 2005-08-22 16:50:24

I can tell you exactly where mattresses are reconstituted. At a warehouse on 19th St. between 6th and 7th Ave. in Park Slope.

I'm desperately in need of a new mattress (my back is killing me). It seems like most of the mattress stores I can actually afford to shop at have turned into used-car-salemen havens. Seriously, the last pushy salesman admitted his former employer was a local used car dealer. I walk in and it feels like "what can I do to put you in a mattress today?" I'm assuming they work on commission. Maybe I'd do better finding what works for my back then ordering by phone?

12 years ago I purchased a mattress from 1-800 Mattres and the experience was excellent and the matress lasted for 12 years. I then thought I would upgrade myself -- got rid of a perfectly good mattress and bought a Stearns and Foster at Macys for nearly 4x the price. In less than 2 years the mattress now has a 1.5" depression in the middle and Macys refuses to take it back. I'm going back to 1-800 Mattres.

I love 1-800 Mattress! I got my bed 5 years ago. They delivered and assembled it so fast I didn't even get a chance to tip the delivery guys! The bed bug thing sounds scary however.

posted by charlene on 2005-08-22 22:06:56

The scary bed bug thing is not an urban myth - actually know someone who has them. Now I am absessed with them. Last year the Times had articles about an outbreak at the Waldorf. Yeach. Anyway. Avoid Sleepys, got burned there. I was thinking of getting the best matress at Ikea. Seems some of there goods are often comparable to higher priced lines. Anybody have an opinion on Ikea mattresses?

posted by ogma on 2005-08-22 23:04:15

I saw a segment or series about reconstituted mattresses a few years ago on one of the local NYC news shows. It was, as usual, a fraud on the poor, who were being sold used mattresses as new, with all the sanitary issues literally covered up. At that time, it seemed to be limited to poor areas where the range of shopping options is limited (and the opportunity to rip off the powerless is greater). Of course, in our hypergreedy business climate, why not extend it to a wider market? I don't know if this is true, but it wouldn't surprise me. I think if I were buying a mattress now, I would ask for a guarantee of a new mattress from all new materials.

posted by aw on 2005-08-23 00:52:51

Regarding IKEA mattresses, I'd like to know more from anyone who has one, too. Their construction seems different than most mattresses and I don't know if that is necessarily good or bad. The sleeper sofa things seem made for once-in-a-while use and not nightly sleeping. I'm worried their mattresses might wear down in a similar fashion??? (Of course, one of the problems I keep forgetting about is how would I get a big ol' mattress home with my little car anyway?)

posted by Libby on 2005-08-23 12:15:56

1-800-Mattress is a decent option if you are buying one of the "S" brands, but anyone in the market for a mattress (especially a higher-end one) should seriously consider buying a custom-made latex mattress.

After a looong research process, I just bought one and could not be happier.

Best mattress resource on the web I've found is the forum at http://www.whatsthebest-mattress.com/

1-800-Mattress rules! I used them the last time I moved, and I was thrilled with both their prices and service. My whole family has used them at one time or another...never a problem or complaint...the opposite, in fact.
Based on all the lawsuits and fines that I am constatntly hearing about with Sleepy's(see last Thursday's Newsday), you couldn't get me into one of those stores if you paid me. I'll stick with 1-800-Mattress.

I called 1800 mattress yesterday (SUNDAY!) just to ask a few questions. My husband and I decided we wanted a new bed and went to sleepy's and some other mattress store across the street. I was overwhelmed! I didn't feel like I could trust anything I was told and researching on my own was frustrating beacuse one person may love a mattres while another hates it. It's an extremely personal preference. So, I called 1800 mattress to ask what they had, prices, and if they could shed some light on the differences among some of the choices. Before I knoew it I had bought a bed, paid less than what I saw at the stores, and had it in a few hours! It's a new comfortable bed, they took the old one away, and the delivery men were very professional. I am so pleased, and have a hard time believing in this day and age about having to worry about bedbugs. I would recommend anyone looking for a bed to call 1800 mattress

I just ordered a bed from 1-800-mattress and it has been an absolute nightmare ever since. i am one of the unfortunate people in which they have brought bed bugs into our home. they are taking zero responsibility for their actions and to top it off, they have minimum wage employees running (not only working but actually running) the customer service department... all we asked is for the company to come in and remove our bed and give us a refund - i didnt even ask for them to pay for exterminating, dry cleaning, etc... i have given proof that I had an exterminator etc, but they dont haven't had anyone in in the past few days that could help us... im not sure how much people save on buying a mattress through them (we did it out of convenience), but i will tell you first hand, i would have rather payed triple the amount than have to deal with those people again...

In response to the post by "Keri": search for "bedbugs" on the internet and you will find several university web sites that explain that bedbugs are a becoming an epidemic because the pesticides that wiped them out before World War two were banned in the 1970s. They also explain how bedbugs are being spread by mattress deliveries, because when they remove an old mattress that is infested with bedbugs, they place it in the delivery truck along with the new mattresses yet to be delivered. Think about it!

IT APPEARS MOST OF THESE POSITIVE ALLEGED TESTIMONIALS WERE WRITTEN BY 1800MATTRES EMPLOYEES IN ORDER TO FOOL THE PUBLIC INTO THINKING OTHER MATTRESS ESTABLISHMENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SPREAD OF BED BUGS, THE SELLING OF REFURBISHED/USED MATTRESSES AND MISLEADING THE PUBLIC.
FACT #1-I WOULD NEVER CONSIDER PURCHASING A MATTRESS BY PHONE, EVEN IF THEY DID OFFER ME A TRIAL PERIOD. I WOULD PREFER THE KNOWLEDGE OF AN EXPERIENCED MATTRESS PROFESSIONAL, WHO WILL HELP ME CHOOSE THE COMFORT, SUPPORT, WARRANTY AND PRICE OF THE MATTRESS THAT IS RIGHT FOR ME!!

FACT #2-BED BUGS WERE BROUGHT OVER HERE FROM 3RD WORLD COUNTRIES WHO NO LONGER USE PESTICIDES, AS THEY WERE BANNED IN THE 70'S. WHEN A MATTRESS IS ENVIRONMENTALLY REMOVED FROM YOU HOME AND TO THE TRUCK, IT IS WRAPPED IN PLASTIC AND NOT NEAR ANY NEW MATTRESS SETS, AS THEY TOO ARE "SEALED" IN PLASTIC FROM THE FACTORY. IT IS JOHN Q. PUBLIC THAT PLACES THEIR USED MATTRESS OUT AT THE CURB, THAT ADDS TO THE SPREAD OF BED BUGS, NEEDLESS TO SAY, IF YOU HAVE THEM, YOU ALSO TRANSPORT THEM ON YOUR CLOTHING, WHEREAS THEY JUMP ONTO OTHERS IN SUBWAYS, PLANES, TRAINS AND THEREFORE AND OUTBREAK.
FACT #3- AS FOR ANY NEWS ARTICLES ABOUT ANY MAJOR MATTRESS COMPANY ALLEGEDLY SELLING DISCOUNTED MATTRESSES THAT WERE USED AND REFURBISHED...THE STATE REGULATES THEM ALL AND THAT IS WHY THERE IS A "LAW TAG" SEWN ONTO EACH BED, INDICATING THE MATERIALS, DATES, FACTORY. BY THE WAY, THE MANUFACTURERES "MAKE THE BEDS", NOT THE RETAILERS, THEY JUST SELL THEM.
FACT #4- LOOK FOR AND CHOOSE A BED, AS IF YOU WERE PURCHASING A CAR. FIND A PROFESSIONAL, TEST FOR COMFORT, PRICE, SUPPORT, FEATURES AND WARRANTIES.

YOU WOULDN'T SHOP FOR A CAR BY PHONE..I WANT TO MEET THE PERSON WHO I AM DEALING WITH AND KNOW I CAN RETURN TO THEM FOR ADVISE OR PROBLEMS.
WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE OLD FASHIONED WAY OF SHOPPING?

NIGHT, NIGHT, DON'T LET THE BED BUGS BITE!!

I received a different matrress from what I ordered but becuase it was intended for a guest room, never noticed until I had company one year later. 1800mattres did send someone to the house and confirmed the faulty mattress. I was only offered credit for a replacemnt of the same quality which i had received. With that, I would have to pay and additional $50 each time they brought me another mattress of equal quality because none of the show rooms recommended by them had a sample.

Do not get a mattress from 1800-Mattress. I got a mattress recently, and they were very nice on the phone, very professional. They gave me BED BUGS. When I called to complain about that, and the fact that I noticed the mattress was DEFECTIVE... immediately, they directed me to a manager who had a very rehearsed response as to why the mattress could not have given me bedbugs, and that they would not accept the mattress even if it was defective because of the bugs... I got it two weeks ago, and it's been a nightmare. Spread the word. 1800-Mattress is infecting NY

While no one is perfect, after extensive research and 4 beds in 15 years, 1-800-mattress really is the best and most accomodating bedding retailer in NY. I recognize that this is like saying 'the best used car salesman', but there it is. My entire family uses them. In fact, my mother recently ordered 13 beds of all shapes and sizes to accomodate all of her grandchildren, and 1-800-mattress delivered ever single on in one shot. I'd recommend them to anyone.

PS - As a former infestee of boith bedbugs and carpet beetles(nightmare!), you all should know that beds are not always the source. They can be brought into a home in many ways. Everything from curtains, furniture, luggage, and stored clothing to cardboard boxes. According to my exterminator, it is far less likely for then to come in on a new mattress as they are sealed in plastic, and bedbugs need to hang in places where they are likely to have ready access to a human host. Most mattresses will sit in the warehouse for weeks/months before they are sold.

Good luck!

I not only was overcharged by 1-800-Mattress, they had apathetic customer service people who took little interest in getting my money back to me. Additionally, I received no advance notice that they would be delivering and ended up receiveing my call and my mattress at 10am on a Saturday. I would discourage anyone from dealing with that company.

Order at your own risk.

I ordered a Serta (firm) pillow top. The mattress stinks.. I mean it smells *BAD*, like it's been in storage for 3 yrs in some musty basement.

Also it's NOT firm... but soft.

Also the pillowtop is clumpy, and lumpy.

Then when I complained they told me I had to pay to have it shipped out of state JUST SO THEY COULD EVALUATE IT. So I'm supposed to do what? SLeep on the floor?

I will NEVER EVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES purchase ANYTHING (even a paperclip) from these scumbags, and nor should you.

Feel free to email me PERSONALLY at slambango@yahoo.com for further information on my bad experience with this vendor. They still have not done ANYTHING for me customer-service-wise, and I'm still sleeping (or trying to sleep) on this crap mattress.

Hi,

Just a note about reconstituting mattresses:

I worked for Brookstone where we sold Tempur-Pedic beds, and those come with a 90 day trial period. People would often ask what happens to the beds people return.

The beds, as well as pillows, MUST be destroyed if they are returned. It is ILLEGAL to resell used beds and pillows.

1800 Mattress: Bedbugs. I hate to say this, but it's true. Same thing as above (Genevieve): seam ripping on the side of the "new" $700.00 mattress (which seems like a tell-tale sign of re-covering), then a sudden appearance of never-before-seen bedbugs which have cost me god knows how much in drycleaning, exterminators, etc. I don't know what the alternatives are, but don't use this company.
