We just got a tip that American Frame is a great place to go to frame things yourself at an affordable rate.
I frame a lot of artwork and my favorite resource is www.americanframe.com. I have been dealing with them for about 10 years and they are FABULOUS. Lori
We checked them out, and here is our take:
1. their website is approachable, friendly and easy to use
2. they are a family run business, and it shows in a positive way
3. their prices are very good
4. you can make mistakes online, so we would experiment the first time
We used their interface to upload a photograph from our own file and built a mat and frame around it. It was easy to do and the total price was $18 (hard to beat). One catch, however, is that they only sell their frames with plexi-glass.
American Frame also has what they call an Art Shop, which allows you to upload digital images to their servers where they will print them and frame them for you. If you wanted to give photographs as gifts, for example, they could print and frame twenty pictures and then mail them to your list.
If you like self framing and do alot of it, we give this resource a thumbs up. (Thanks, Lori! First published 2004-12-17)
Actually, you don't need to buy plexi-glass... more thumbs up for American Frame - they also sell framing accessories
It's actually acrylic, which is what most museum's use to protect printed artwork.
Thanks so much for posting this. I had just ordered three 8x10 black and white photo prints that I need to get framed.
I was able to upload the photos and see how the whole thing would look, using their step by step process to select the frame size, matts, etc. I tried to order the frames on line but my order kept getting screwed up (their interface is a bit clunky). Finally, I just called them up - the lady was really nice and took the order over the telephone. All three frames (approx. 18 sq. inches each) including double matting, foam core backing, plexiglas, tax and s&h came to $200. Not too bad.
I love this company! I've been using them since art school -- they're in my town and they let me pick up my orders. :) Great customer service, great products, great prices. I've never had a single problem with them.
Plexiglass is extruded acrylic sheet. FYI.

I've been a commercial artist all of my working life. I'm 64 years old, and I've tried them all. After many years of buying many, many frames from all over, I think I'll stick with American Frame.
These people are very good at what they do. I believe they are the best in the business. Take it from an old veteran.

Me 2.
Have ordered a few thousand dollars worth of custom prints and frames. Excellent service, although they could pay a little more attention to, and answer, their email questions.
Good company.
American Frame is a great place to shop. When I was producing art full time I was able to frame a whole show For around five to six-hundred dollars. In the past they have had an affiliate program. They donated a percentage of your payment to an art group of your choice. About the acrylic - The big plus of framing with it is that it doesn't break, it will, however, scratch. If transporting framed pieces arrange them facing front to front and back to back and insert a piece of cloth between them. Cardboard will scratch the acrylic. To clean wipe with a lightly wetted soft cloth preferrably lint-free cotton. Do not use paper towels as these will scratch the surface. They sell a great anti-static spray for the acrylic too.
