Finder Guy.com: Personal Concierge Service

2004_7_finder guy.gifWe are not sure what to think of this. Help us out. Tipped off to Finder Guy by someone who "tested them once to no avail, but they did try," we love the idea and want to believe that it really works. Daily Candy says that they have a 90% success rate and New York Mag says that despite the odds its worked for them.

This is no search engine. You type in what you are looking for, such as "antique skeleton with revealed brain," and one of five full time "finders" begins searching their database of 2,600 New York stores. They promise to find what you are looking for within three days (or give you at least a close answer), and the service is free. We just entered "extreme drop leaf table" and are awaiting our reply. (Thanks, Martin!) MGR

I have used finderguy.com a handful of times in the past couple of months. Heard about them on Howard Stern. He found something through them. They really are amazing. In fact, they even emailed me personally to get more information on what I wanted them to find (ideas for a gift). Will be interested to see if they find the drop leaf. Cheers.

My friend wanted some pink t-shirt with an illustration of a pony and a birthday invite on it. She saw it in Budget Living but that was all the info I had. With that obscure a description, the findgerguy people found the shirt and a store that sold it and I was crowned an awesome friend.

This is what I just got back from them. While the range is not huge, I would have to say it that it works! And only 4 hours later!:

I love living in NYC, but it can be a royal pain for some of the most simple of tasks. Take for example losing a button - where others just pop into the corner notions store next to the Safeway - New Yorkers have to go to the button 'hood and spend a day on this annoying errand. Another time I had to find motion sickness bands for my seasick-prone boyfriend prior to a tropical vacation -- where do I locate these on the island of Manhattan? Enter my new favorite timesaving site -- FinderGuy.com. Just tell them what you're searching for and they'll hunt it down in a NYC boutique -- FOR FREE. They found me a button store near my office and a drugstore that carried the desired wristbands -- all within a 24 hour turnaround.

Also, another issue which I didn't mention in my post is regarding theoretical groundings of information science(s)/studies. Here as well, there are theories regarding separate research focuses (information retrieval, information seeking, information behaviors, etc...). However, these sound like theoretical frameworks for various sub-disciplines of information studies rather than Information Science (singular). What is that 'thing' that ties all the information sciences (plural) together, besides for the fact that they all claim to be dealing with the 'thing' called 'information' - which is not necessarily defined the same across the various concentrations and research areas within information science/studies.
