2004_7_land of nod.gifFreedom from the baby ghetto. We don't even have kids yet and we can tell you that the children's market for cribs and clothing is a mess. While there are lots of products and services out there, the one thing that is hard to find (ironically, given the subject) is beautiful, simple, childlike design.

The Land of Nod is a children's store that was started by a yound couple in Illinois before Gordon Segal (the founder of Crate & Barrel, along with his wife, Carole), knocked on their door and asked if they could be partners. That was a good day....

Land of Nod is now a beautifully put together collection of traditional, fun baby and children's furniture and accessories, which are simple in design and calming for the senses. There stores are mainly in the Chicago area, but you can see them online and pick up their catalogues at any Crate & Barrel store.

2004_7_arts and crafts crib.jpgProblems? While Land of Nod is a terrific place to go shopping, the price tags may surprise you if you are familiar with some of the items. While many things are exclusive, certain items like their Arts and Crafts Crib ($799) and the Jenny Lind Crib ($329) are a good deal more expensive than other places on the web. This crazy landscape of varying prices is all part and parcel of the children's furniture ghetto that you run into out there, and which Land of Nod has tried to change. MGR
