Hello AT,
I saw some zebrawood tables at a Thai restaurant in NYC and also in this kitchen makeover in O at home magazine...I love the color contrasts in the wood. I am now on a quest to find a simple, narrow (as my apartment is small) coffee table in this type of zebrawood.

I'm so tired of the dark solid browns that is already everywhere in my apartment. Although I have seen this type of wood furniture pop up here and there, I can't seem to find any nice ones being sold in any stores or online. If anyone have any suggestions or can lead me to the right path, it would be greatly appreciated. Also, any knowledge about zebrawood in general would be nice too.
Thanks! Bee
Anyone?
Try Room and Board - you can customize table tops and bases.

Try a plain old table and some veneer from the local lumber yard/DIY outlet.
Save a bundle and get a decent table that looks exactly as you want it.

i'd hunt down a pretty slab of zebrawood (www.westpennhardwoods.com comes to mind) and then oil it, find a cheapie coffee table frame, etc. zebrawood is gorgeous.
my brother built our media credenza and we mimicked the look of zebrawood by using a nice grainy red oak, and instead of the traditional route, we mixed a little black oil paint into wood oil and so the finished product actually looks like zebrawood :)
it's hard to tell in the photo... but the facing shows it a bit easier:

the trees that "zebrawood" is harvested from are native to West Africa and are endangered. I would strongly discourage you from buying any product made of "zebrawood." This includes veneered products (like the Room and Board tables and the cabinets pictured). Instead, I would consider a sustainably harvested (Forest Service Certified) wood native to North America.
If you are really set on the zebrawood look, i believe there is a bamboo product available as a veneer or as cabinetry-grade piece of plywood with a somwhat similar tiger stripe pattern.

Many kitchen stores sell zebrawood (or a very realistic-looking zebrawood veneer, which would eliminate the problem that ursamajor describes above) cabinetry and such, and almost all of them will custom make you a table from any material they sell. It might cost a pretty penny, but it'll be exactly what you want. I'd recommend MCKB on 19th Street. They have a nice zebrawood display in their showroom.

above is the link to the somewhat similar bamboo product i mentioned.
Again, zebrawood products, including zebrawood veener are most commonly derived from a species of tree that is listed as CRITICALLY ENDANGERED in their native West African habitat by the IUCN. It would be grossly irresponsible to buy any zebrawood product without knowing exactly where it was harvested from.
(critically endangered is the step just below "extinct in the wild," so it's kind of a big deal)

Gus Modern Design group has four great Zebra wood pieces. The Return Bench, Drake Coffee Table, Pawn Table, and Bishop Table. You can find them at Bobby Berk Home

there is an amazing product made of bamboo - smith and fong plyboo that is striped. i saw it in dwell mag originally and then saw it live at a local organic home store (livingreen.com) and it's amazing! you can buy it and have a cabinetmaker actually make it to your specs. it's lovelier than the zebrawood and you won't feel guilty enjoying it :)
it's a bit busy for a floor, but for cabinets or a desk - it's beautiful!

Overstock had some -- they are now out of stock -- but it would be a good resource particularly if you are price sensative. See for example:

West Elm had some gorgeous zebrawood lately. You might still be able to find some of it around:

We had friends with the zebrawood veneer dining table from Room & Board. In less than a year, the veneer started to peel and break down. They exchanged it for a solid walnut table top. Room & Board's products are usually very high quality, but due to the endangered status of zebrawood and this incident, I would opt for something else.

Calligaris sells chairs and tables in Asian ebony from Indonesia, which has light and dark brown stripes. I have a great coffee table topped with it. Jensen Lewis http://www.calligarisshopmanhattan.com/ in Manhattan sells their stuff and is great to deal with, but you'll need to find somewhere to see the finish - the photo on their Web site is awful http://www.calligarisshopmanhattan.com/pid/00000618/Calligaris-Planet-Dinette-Table
Because of the endangered species discussion, I checked - it is endangered due to habitat loss because they're logging the rainforests.

I produce handmade hardwood tables. I only work with F.S.C certified woods. I do work in Zebrawood which is bought from a renewable wood farm.(which is more expensive but eco correct) I also work in locally harvested trees in upstate NY (walnut, maple, oak, cherry, tulip, butternut)
The zebrawood you like on the kitchen is a veneer where they only use the tight grain. You can special order veneer from any high end lumber yard.
Hope this helps, Cheers, 21.c
