Here's an interesting dilemma that I am dealing with - maybe someone else has had the same issue...
I am currently looking for a new coffee table. I am leaning towards a couple lovely wooden ones (e.g. the Nelson bench). The problem is that I entertain a lot, and many of my friends like to come over and put their feet up (shoes and all) on my coffee table. I used to enforce a shoes-off-at-the-front-door policy, but people thought I was crazy, so I let it go. The problem now is that I am seriously hesitant to buy an expensive wood coffee table because their shoes have scraped the edge of my old one so much that it looks terrible.
I am considering a metal/glass one (e.g. cb2 smart table) just for this reason, but I much prefer the wood.
Suggestions?

Cat, have you considered upgrading to well-mannered friends?

Be happy that your friends want to come over.
Buy the glass/metal one.
Friends are more important than the coffee table.

agree with Mr. Dangerous. Also, in the knob department I lean towards anthropologie and renovationhardware...
Question--this is driving me crazy. You know the shelves that you hang in a kitchen to diplay plates and pitchers and such? They are like an open cabinet and have a bar across to keep things from falling out... I can't find one anywhere!! Please please help me....

Dear god, I would NEVER put my shoes on someone's coffee table.
But perhaps buy the wood coffee table you want then put a sheet of glass on top.
cat, it's your house. enforce whatever rules suit you. it's unbelievably rude that your friends put they feet on your coffee table, but you teach people how to treat you.
reinstate the shoes off policy and add a feet off the table policy. and institute a fine for violators. they owe you a table.

I don't allow shoes in the house either. My friends just deal with it. It's like Supernanny--you need to train your friends. Perhaps offer them special treats when their feet are not on your table.
Here's my question--does anyone use their picture rails? Do you use clear fishing wire to hang your pictures? I don't love the look of hanging wires everywhere...yes, I know an option is to just bang holes in the wall, but since I have the picture rails, I'm wanting to use them.

Notwithstanding rude friends, you could always cover the Nelson bench with a custom made glass top, maybe at least that would protect the top from getting scratches!

totheworld, I have picture molding that I use for hanging things and find it a lot more flexible than the hole-in-the-wall approach. I can move things around freely and the fishing line is pretty inconspicuous. The heavy-duty wire is not that ugly either and I use it for heavier things, like mirrors.

Once, picking up a craigslist piece from a stranger's apartment, I noticed their rows of shoes just inside the front door. I was somewhat amazed how automagically i de-shoed myself. So much for ex-GFs calling me oblivious.

I actually have picture molding, and for some pictures I use it and for some I don't. I know it sounds weird, but it works for me.
Meanwhile, when I DO use it, I prefer to use it with those silk cord hanger things buhcuzz they're reeeeeally pretty, I think. They cost around $12 at Gracious Home and I think they look like they're worth way more than that.

Here's the wall where that little mixture is, although really it looks better in person, and it kind of helps to look at it straight on, so that the one that's on that hanger thing on the molding relates more specifically to the CD-holder/half-column-pedestal, while the other pieces swirl off to the right.

Thanks to all for your comments/suggestions. I laughed out loud at the supernanny idea! I guess I just don't have it in me to tell someone to take their feet off my furniture. I just sit there silently grinding my teeth until they do!
P2 - I am glad you said that about the smart table. I knew it was low, and that was my biggest hesitation. Know of any similar ones that aren't so low?
I like the idea of the glass top for the nelson table, but the table is already waaay at the top of my price range, so a custom top is out of the question...

But Cat, the CB2 Smart table is SERIOUSLY low. Make sure you check the dimensions carefully.
