Beautiful Monday, gather round...
Welcome to isaiah who agrees with PlantTherapy, Richard who reminds us that Bo Concept has good designs, it's the service that's often bad, CTWoodGuy who is a National Wood Floor (NWFA) certified installer and Fiona who has a good question about Waterworks' "tent sale".

while the design is not quite delicate enough, it did occur to me that if there had been *pretty* tools while i was growing up, i might be doing the sorts of things that require glue guns and wrenches.

i just discovered the store on friday, and it is a lot of fun, though the bright colors and dull price tags make the products more for gifts than for myself.

Rasil,

A friend gave me the floral hammer as a housewarming last year - great gift. It's smaller than a standard hammer .... but unscrew the handle and their are screw drivers nested (babushka style) in varying sizes!! It is fabulous.

i have a similar screwdriver - matreshka-style. while not great for heavy labor, it's very helpful at times!

I have yet to see a babushka (a grandmother in English)containing various tools inside, if you unscrew her handle...

Does anyone know what company makes this lamp?
I found it at Calypso home. I think it may be a bit over priced there + I'll have to pay tax on it. Any sugestions other than this ebay listing would be cool!
The lamp is a Mercury Glass Gourd base with a Reed shade.

Thanks in Advance

good job!

Right, where is P(too)?

Robust discussions about nature of angles and minimalism aren't the same without him.

Minh, am I right, you're in Montreal?
Would there be festivals in May/June? I'm starting to plan the trip.

So, what happened to Weekend Therapy? Did I blink and miss it???

Alex, you mean "matryoshka," those Russian wooden nesting dolls. I have a little screwdriver like that, too... the smallest one inside is for repairing glasses frames! I love it.

OK, I'll probably just end up reposting this tomorrow (let me add another cheerful vote for AT boards here) -

I just put a scratch in my new dining table. I think it was a staple. It's pretty shallow, and this should be something I can fix, right?

Since the internet knows all, I used the sensible (I thought) suggestion of a brown crayon. But as I tried to polish this out, I was left with a scratch and a shiny streak all around it.

Ideas? The suggestion I've found is a minwax (or similar) pencil, #0000 steel wool, and furniture wax.

My mother uses walnuts to great effect (rubbing them into a scratch), but I'm not sure that would work on my table. I don't even know the wood or finishing product.

It was made in Viet Nam. Solid wood, dark stain, fashionable but too perishable slightly matte finish. Arrgh. It was the right style, size, and very attractively priced. Is this my punishment for buying offshore? I'm saving my pennies for a high-quality table, but we needed somewhere to eat meanwhile. No toddler dinners on the new couch!

Help me!

posted by original blues on 2006-04-17 23:55:39

what about getting the whole table redone in some more durable finish? Or just the table top? Otherwise it's inevitably going to get scratched again. If you like the shape, and it's well constructed, it might be worth it.

I read an interview with some designer somewhere who said that if a client insists on ordering from a catalog like pottery barn, she always tells them they're going to have to have the piece refinished, as the finish is never properly done. So I don't think it's a matter of ordering from offshore, fwiw.

The following question is not seeking movie trivia but help in designing a new apt :) Jennifer Anniston (bear with me) was in a movie that showed her apartment with Haywood Wakefield furniture (desk, etc.) a (great) purple rug in the living room, a mosaicy coffee table. It was a qood and fun combination of some clean lined, warm toned vintage furniture mixed with some florals and other fun stuff. Any help much appreciated.

posted by JW on 2006-04-18 09:12:46

Oh, sorry. There was no question mark because I forgot to (directly) ask the (implied)question.

Does anyone know what movie that was? I'm trying to help out a young one.

Original blues -

You could try a product called Restor-a-finish. It's designed to cover scratches and water marks, and you just rub it on with a cloth. You can google restor-a-finish and use their website to find a distributor near where you live.

JW -

Sorry I can't help you on the movie, but isn't it funny how you ideas pop up everywhere when you're open to them? I think part of the reason my sweetie loves the TV show "Monk" is that he wants to live in Monk's Apartment.

Good luck and I sincerely home you don't end up having to endure an Aniston movie marathon.

Addressing the kind people from Jenny and Clove's thread.
I did NOT "insult" anyone in that thread, other than to say that a couple people were nasty, and they were being nasty.

My posts from that thread are comprised of the following:

Post 1: Idea, 1; Link, 1; Complement, 3; Question, 1

Post 2: Idea, 1; Complement, 2; Opinion, 2; Example, 1; Explanation, 1

Post 3: Idea, 3; Link, 5

Post 4: Opinion, 1; Custom photo, 1

Post 5 and Post 6: To Martha

Post 7: Custom photo, 1

Post 8; Addressing comments made to ME, by Jamie, who hadn't said one darn thing about the apartment of any substance or value.

More complements.

I just don't like one area, which is an OPINION, and I state AS AN OPINION several times thoughout this whole thread. Other people didn't like the same things, and they weren't jumped on.

At this point "Not Jamie" says I'm "insulting" people. Where? How? Who?

Then another person (or the same one?) leaps in to take a dig.

Neither one of which has said anything about the apartment at all. Nothing. Just came by to attack me.

Yet another person chimes in, Anne, this time, saying I'm insulting someone. Who? Where? It's not insulting to suggest that people actually make comments on the apartment featured, whether pro, con, ideas, opinions, suggestions, complements. That's what the whole area was about.

From the rules page:
Readers...will be encouraged to comment and assess.

I commented. I assessed. What's it to anyone how long my comments and assessments are? What does it matter?

Do you want real comments? On specific things? Or just "I like it" replies. The latter doesn't tell anyone anything.

And it's not insulting to say someone is nasty when they're being nasty. For crying out loud, all I did was express my opinion.

Next thing I know, I have "Not Jamie" making weight and height cracks. LOL! Sorry, I gave up stiletto heels after breaking part of my foot. Not from the shoes either.

Creepy stuff on the Flickr page? Creepy? That's would have been attempts at repainting someone's home who asked for help here. Or it would have been the IKEA stuff in Jenny and Clove's apartment.

Oh, and someone else does use LOL and they didn't get hollered at. Why not?

Clove. And where have you been? Not to seem defensive? You don't have to defend your space, you're NOT being attacked.

At the very first post I made, or any of the other posts where people didn't like the fabric, or the bookshelves (yes, there WERE more people than just me), you simply say what you just said:
"We both love our wall with our books & murphy bed. For us, it is a focal point of color"

That's all you need to say.

Do you think I would have then continued to spend HOURS (oh yes) and HOURS online loading pictures, looking for ideas, pulling up sites on dial-up and a slow connection?

Do you think I would have gone through taking screen shots, converting them to jpgs, switching operating systems, loading up an ancient paint program, fussed with the pictures, layering things on top of other things, or drawing from scratch, saving them in jpg format, switching operating systems again so I can use AOL and the Safari browser, going back to Flickr and uploading them?

I'm not a complete idiot, ya know. Naive. But not a complete idiot.

I was trying to be HELPFUL and use MY TIME to BENEFIT YOU. You have any idea what professionals charge for that kind of service? For photo alteration relating to interior design?

Because you didn't speak up, I wasted my time for nothing. Nothing. Nothing but attacks on me and trying to be helpful.

I have bookshelves. They were open. One side is as close to the windows and yours are. Some of a series of books were pretty and colorful. I liked them too. I also enjoyed their colorful presence.

They aren't colorful anymore. The light leeches out the color over time.

Look at clothing in stores that aren't even exposed to outdoor light or direct sun. Some shoulder fading from a couple months under flourescent lights.

All textiles will fade over time. So will the books. That means chairs, rugs, wall paint, etc. All choices have consequences. Colorful exposed books now, faded books in a couple years. That's YOUR choice.

I just didn't want you to find out the way I found out...pulling out a book only to realize it was many shades lighter on the spine from light. And sun NEVER touches that particular shelf.

I'm very sorry. I really am.

When I post for a person, I want to make sure I can give them as many ideas as possible. And I try to explain the reasons why they might be good ideas. Now, later, never, that's up to YOU.

I give specific ideas, and provide links. Great if you end up using them, because now you can actually find the product or see the picture I was referring to.

I did a couple pictures for Rob, in his Apartmenquarium. I thought the orange would look nice, and he liked the colors in the picture I showed him. After fussing with the pictures, and emailing him the link, he came over, looked, and didn't like it. That's fine. He likes the red contrast better. And I wasn't that thrilled with the way the orange came out either, it just didn't look like the way I imagined it would. Oh well.

No mean things were bandied about. I did it. He didn't like it. Everything is hunky-dory.

But for crying out loud, don't let a person go on and on, like this, when you don't like the ideas. I not only wasted the time of Jenny and Clove, I wasted EVERYONE'S time with my long posts full of what I thought were good ideas.

You don't have to say "your help sucks" or "we don't need your steeeeenking help or badges".

I wasted MY time on people that didn't want it, didn't need it, didn't like it, and opened me up to being kicked verbally several times without ever kindly saying:

"We both love our wall with our books & murphy bed. For us, it is a focal point of color"

Look at all the words and time I wasted.
