Earth to Curtis -

Thank you for the tip to lower the clock.

Small details = big impact.

I did it when I got home, and it does look much better. :)

Merci!

flight 001, a great little store for bags and fun travel stuff. also take a look at container store for travel-size bottles and bed bath & beyond for a great selection of tiny size products.

are you crackin' on me, Ptoo? I don't need to spell, I'm going on vacation!!

And thanks, that's exactly what I was trying to think of.

rr - P2 was talking about himself - he misspelled "something". Have a great V ! I need one. Where you going?

"The only Swiss Hotel on Park Ave." is closing? What? Are they turning the place into more condos for the rich? Boy, we need those, don't we. Just not enough condos for the rich in this town!

Going to Shanghai. I'm excited because design*sponge listed some "sponge-worthy" design spots to check out over there. And I need to get some of those split pants as a gift to horrify my pregnant friend. Ha!

Maxwell - I just looked at the contest page and they winners aren't posted there. Is that an oversight? Where would one go but the contest page to find out who the winners are? (I know who won but I directed someone else there and - no winners).

they winners = the winners

rr -- that other store is Mxyplyzyk. There was a prankish character named that in Superman? maybe? who wouldn't go away until you said his name properly...

Rachel -
You're quite welcome. Sometimes these Open Threads are so long if I haven't looked in a while that I can only catch the highlights, but that was the only obvious one of the possible solutions that I could think of so very much right off the bat, and it wasn't even one of your questions you were asking!

Maybe when I have time, I'll have a better look and see if I can ponder your other questions on those little note things you have.

Hey All-
Walking home today I saw a Conserv fridge outside of Roger & Sons, that restaurant supply store on the Bowery. I went inside and asked the price: $499! But that's because they may have a minor ding or two on top or the sides. Delivery would cost $50 (but I'm fairly local and there are no stairs involved)

I'm *VERY* tempted to go back this afternoon and get one. Guido, I can see from past posts that you have one. Any thoughts/advice? I had also stopped in at PC Richard and looked at the LG, which is $780 plus $60 delivery. I don't mind paying the difference if LG is way better, but Conserv seems to have plenty of fans. Opinions before I give the credit card a workout?

I should specify that it was the Conserv fridge/freezer. Jet-lag head, sorry.

posted by Trish M. on 2006-05-02 13:05:10

Trish M, of course that's a great price. I love mine.
Be sure you have a warranty -- the first one I got, the compressor for the freezer didn't work and it was a real arm wrestle with the dealer to get a working one.

ABOUT THOSE DINGS -- the front of the fridge is NOT magnetic, so you won't be covering dents with family photos or tasteful nudes. I looked at a used one and didn't like the big dent it had in the front door.
The side is magnetic, so it's kind of great -- forced clean front, kitchen kitch safely on the side.

Any other questions, I'll be online for another 45 minutes then dropping everything to claw my way into the BBG and buy all the peonies.
or something like that.

p.s. on the Conserv

how you tell that the whole thing is working:
green light at the top left of the unit will go on within 5 or 10 minutes of plugging it in. The manual is a little opaque.

Make the delivery guys wait until the light turns from yellow to green, because if you don't you might live with your old fridge in the middle of the floor and your new but dead fridge in place for a couple weeks. I really hated that.

posted by guido on 2006-05-02 14:35:44

Guido - thanks! I hadn't thought about a warranty. I'll be sure to ask. The salesman said there wouldn't be dings on the front, but I'll check it out before the delivery men leave to make sure.

Off to go get it now. So excited!! (Now where am I going to *put* it???)

So, does anyone wants to join me tonight @ the Dorothy Draper Show?

posted by Tat on 2006-05-02 15:19:42

Mary, Mxyplyzyk the store is spelled slightly different from the Superman character probably to avoid infringement(?). I'm a comic book geek. Mr. Mxyzptlk had to be tricked into saying his name backwards before he would go away!

posted by jimkk on 2006-05-02 17:09:04

jimkk, thanks for the explanation. For some reason the name has been stuck in my head for weeks and I couldn't place the reference. And googling the name of the store didn't help either because of the different spelling.

posted by Doug on 2006-05-02 17:28:05

jimkk -- thanks for correcting me! I never even noticed the name change, but that's probably because I couldn't pronouce his name really...

I'm so mad I could spit! Went to order the Conserv fridge only to be told, "Oh we only have a few left in black, white or grey." WHAT???!!! You think the guy could have told me that when I stopped in earlier to ask questions. They won't be getting any more in. So I shlepped twenty blocks for nothing. So upset... I was on the verge of tears leaving the place. As a consolation I bought a cheap ladle at the liquidation sale next door.

So it's still a good deal at $499 if you need a black, white or grey Conserv. I'll just have to wait and save more.

Re: stainless magnetism (if that's what the conserv is...), I heard someone at the paint store this weekend talking about getting a coating to put on his fridge to make it magnetic...don't know the details. Just thought I'd throw that out there in case anyone with stainless craves fridge magnets.

Stupid curtain rod question: I bought an Umbra double-rod thingy today. It's the long one, so there's an extension in the middle of both rods. Installed everything. When I pull my panels shut, no problem. When I pull them open, though, the rods slide! That is going to drive me crazy. Does anyone know any tricks to get the rods to stay in place? Is tape the only option?

posted by Jeffery on 2006-05-03 00:28:16

Tape does work, a tiny strip of duct tape at the back of the rod join, Jeffery. I hate that too.

Are there screws at the ends to hold the rod in place? Are they fastened tightly? Are the panels on clips or rings or are they rod-pocket panels? The latter sometimes cause more rod sliding.
