Is there a gallery hanging system that anybody recommends? I have a couple of large open walls, and I'd like to install the kind of system I've seen in some galleries- a piece of hardware runs along the ceiling and wires can be extended down at any location to hang art. My reason for seeking a system like this is two fold:

1. Exposed brick walls are a bitch to hang art on.
2. I'd like some flexibility to change/move artwork without drilling new holes every time.

Is anyone familiar with these hanging systems? different manufactures? Anyone who works for a gallery that has used this kind of hardware that could recommend brands to have a look at?

Thanks for any advice.

Does anyone know the source for a Sapiens bookcase knockoff that was discussed recently? Not the one at cb2.

Did I just make a huge mistake?

I was leaving for work, and the people down the street were having a garage sale - and there, in front, a danish modern style dining table with extensions and 4 chairs (one needed repair), and an (almost) matching sideboard.

$30 for the table and chairs, $35 for the sideboard. I walked away.

I couldn't tell if they were made by anyone in particular, and I can't decide if I want to make that leap to light coloured wood. I know my future holds white sofas with dark legs - but I thought the table looked cool.

Arghhghhg.

I'm so indecisive.

Definitely read the above. How to make your own track-hanging system. Doesn't look too hard.

I have a bathroom sink vanity (most likely from IKEA) that has drawers on the side that hold all my stuff. There's no medicine cabinet. I haven't been able to figure out how to organize these drawers. Everything sits at the bottom of the drawer and it is a bad use of space. I have one open plastic box in there that at least provides some separation of the stuff. I've tried to get those one-size-fits-all expander things that sits higher up in the drawer to create another layer so everything doesn't just sit in a jumble at the bottom of the drawer, but I haven't found one that fits. I have searched online in the past for something and got frustrated. Anyone solved this problem?

One thing that works pretty nicely is picture molding, which is a specific kind of wooden molding that's seen in Pre-War buildings, and it has a lip that's sufficient for S-hooks to hang off of, from which wires can drop down to pictures. I guess that COULD go on brick, but it might be tricky.

posted by Curtis on 2006-05-19 10:54:16

Pixie, as I was reading your post the thought occured to me that you could use those sock dividers.

http://www.shop.com/op/~Drawer_Organizer_Diamond-prod-7214142-10365616?sourceid=298

that might work.

Chris(nyc) - there's a picture hanging system that's been featured here recently and the company had a booth at the Arch. Digest show. I can't remember the name of it but I'm sure someone else here can think of it. That may be the thing that will solve your problem.

Thanks Anne.
The sock dividers would help, but they are low and would still keep everything at the bottom. I was hoping to make better use somehow of how deep the drawer the drawer is.

posted by Pixie on 2006-05-19 11:12:27

Sorry - I didn't get that the drawers were so deep.

posted by anne on 2006-05-19 11:19:45

I have the measurement as 5" deep, but I have to go home and check, since I think it's even deeper than that.

The other day I heard about a job opening - production and office manager at a small home accessories company in the Union Sq. area. If anyone here is interested or knows someone that would be interested, get in touch with me.

That would be great.

Wait...

I just did a Google search, I should I have done this first. I foolishly thought this request would be obscure, maybe a couple of products out there. If I'd even slightly done my homework, I'd know that it is a crowded market. Now my problem is going to be winnowing this down to a manageable list of manufactures and figuring out which ones are of quality. On the whole, they seem very affordable too. Much more so than I was expecting:

And here is a distributor with a whole list of different systems:
http://www.picturehanging.com/

posted by chris (nyc) on 2006-05-19 12:14:37

I think I've already narrowed it down to one of these two:

Locator Hanging System, by Picture Hanging Systems Ltd.

or

Art Supplies Click Rail System

That picture hanging system Anne references was the system of frames and mats you purchase, and comes with a hanging template to ensure your grid evens out and pics hang squarely... it's available at The Terenece Conran Shop. But I don't think it would solve your brick wall issue, though, since it relies on individual wall-mounted hangers.

Excuse the dark picture but as you can see the french doors in our bedroom are uncovered and, as my wife enjoys walking around nude, I am starting to realize we are putting on quite the show for the townhouses that overlook our garden. Hence: can anyone recommend drapes or curtains for the bedroom?

Sears brand vacuums get high ratings. My cannister model cost about $350, fits in a small section of my linen closet (where do city-dwellers keep uprights?), has a kinda snazzy headlight, and works great. Cool power attachments. AND A BAG! I tried bagless for a while. I think it is disgusting. Who wants to see their dirt? And where are you supposed to empty it? Into the kitchen garbage? That's disgusting too. Give me a nice clean bag any day. Check out Sears website.

Pixie,

I had a similar situation for a bit, and I ended up using a combination of plastic drawer organizers of different sizes that stack (less used stuff on the bottom tier, toothpaste on the top, etc.) it was a juryrigged (jerryrigged?) setup with rubber drawer liner and wedged containers to avoid shifting when you open/close the drawers. It was non-ideal and not particularly inspired,, but it worked.
I used typical Container Store fare like:
http://tinyurl.com/rc5py

I also found a wire rack to hang my hairdryer & brush inside the bathroom cabinet door.

Just FYI, Restoration Hardware is having a warehouse sale for 2 weekends around Mem. Day. I'll let you know the exact dates when I find out. My brother told me about it and is coming up to work during the sale (in Paramus). He said that the first day of the first weekend the prices are set, the 2nd day a little more flexible and the 3rd day very flexible. The second weekend has more stuff that the trucks bring in during the week and the prices are better. Things that are discontinued will be a part of the sale and if you see "sale" items on the web site then it'll probably be there as well.

I'll keep you informed as I find out more information on it.

the Click Rail System
by Art Supplies Picture Hanging Systems

...seems to be the most low profile with the broadest range of accessories. By chance, is anyone here familiar with this brand/product?

http://www.arts-supplies.net/(S(xu1ywd45mxyrdmv3ap1okp55))/shop/ShopLine.aspx?L=C

I just read their testimonials page. Seems to be used by many galleries, large and small (including Queens College and the Jewish Community Center of Manhattan), as well as home owners. Their list of clients page is even more extensive (used everywhere from the French Embassy in Washington to the offices of the Wall Street Journal).

My mind is made up, this is the system I'm going to go with.
