out of curiousity? are the judges all male? i think to help people understand how the judging works, it might be helpful to get a biography of who the judges are, and where their perspectives are coming from... i think that's normal for most competitions with juries.

Nothing wrong with a little lively debate. An open exchange of ideas is the foundation of democracy.
Sometimes there are more opinions about the packaging of other opinions than the opinions themselves (those would be non-opinion-focused opinion-packaging opinions), but in the end everyone shares the common passion that brings them to the site.

Call me naive, but I think part of the reason for this was that the "No Way" vote was the only one that encouraged respondents to explain. For the few times I voted that way, I didn't want to go on record why, but felt obliged to.
