I will repost this from yesterday (I think it was maybe in the wrong thread) - the re-vamped AT:LA really makes me covet an AT:Toronto. I think there are more Canucks on here than we may think. Plus, the yanks may save some money if we find some good resoures from north of the border. What does it take to start an AT city site? (this may be on an older post... I'll dig around).

I am one of them Canucks you mention from Ottawa....I LOVE this site and have thought how awesomeit would be to see an Ottawa/Montreal/ Toronto version....then us Canucks can actually have access to the resources mentionned without alot of hassles.

I think there used to be an AT:Montreal that was abandoned. There are very few resources mentioned on here that will ship to Canada, not even Target!

A little observation :

Canadian designers, canadian style, and canadian resources on a budget are far more amazing than their north american counterparts.

May be because of the french, scandinavian and and english! influences

No offense to anybody here. all in good humour

Can a vinyl floor be painted? It is in a closet area so it would not get much traffic?

Thanks again for the help I have gotten on AT.

A TO site won't help this canuck, since I'm in Vancouver. I don't think there was ever a Canadian site, though.

And, sorry to say, not much discount for Americans cross-border shopping these days. Going the other way, though, is finally starting to get fun. Once you factor in generally lower sales taxes, the Canadian dollar is practically at par.

We could just start trading good references amongst ourselves. (This would be another vote for a board system over the current open threads).

Another Canuck here, from Hamilton, close to Toronto. I'd love to see a Canadian AT.

The currency difference is indeed pretty minute these days -- if only more places shipped to Canada!

Has everybody seen the "Dog and Cat Cave No. 2" posted here today? Anybody ever see a REALLY amazing covered litter box? I had an architect design something that will be built in as part of a $10,000 renovation that will take me 10 years to save up for, but I'd be willing to spend a pretty good chunk of change in the interim.

One more vote for AT Canada, specifically, Montreal!
Speaking of Mtl.: Tat, here are links to Mtl. Jazz Festival, just released is a great free outdoor concert lineup:

Technical question: Would it be possible to make search results chronological? Maybe add some little up / down arrow on the search results page?

sharon,
yeah i saw a really nice litter box on small spaces on hgtv, i think. it was built in & rather clever. i believe it was sorta half box & half closet, but it was made to look like a wall. everthing was flush w/ the hallway wall, but there was a swing door like you'd see to let them go out side & i think there was a little light in there somehow. anyway, that was walled off like the cat's own tiny, tiny bathroom w/ just a litterbox. then, above that, they just had a linen closet sort of thing. it looked really nice. & the way they did the light was nice too. i think it was behind smoked glass or something b/c you'd never know it was for a cat. you'd think it was for people, like a night light or something.
if you had a linen closet & someone who knew drywall. it wouldn't be that $$$.

thanks, *leeds, as much as I would love to come to see the fireworks and listen to jazz, I only have 1-week break, and it's the next one.

But others, who don'et have plans for your vacation yet - this is a wonderful suggestion. Tried and proved.

Why paint it? Depending on the size of the floor space, it might even cost less to just tear it up and put down new vinyl. It would certainly be easier and less work. Just get the adhesive backed squares. Tear up what's there. try to clean the floor up a little underneath, peel off the sticky backs and slap them down.

Just fyi, any vinyl floor installed in 1981 or before is extremely likely to have asbestos. Mine did. So if it's an old floor, get it tested before tearing it up. Painting may be the way to go.

RE: the vinyl floor. Another option, just cover the floor with either a Chilewich mat or Flor carpet tiles. Much softer than just paint over vinyl.

Tat, June 17th-Switzerland, the first of the fireworks competition. At least you'll get a chance to see that one.

anyone have any suggestions as to places to places to buy old-fashioned doorknobs at reasonable prices? i've been haunting flea markets with no success, and am a bit wary of the e-bay route.

ps. hobsonjobson, i drank a toast in your name at yuen kee, which was as wonderful as you suggested.

rasil - if, by "old-fashioned doorknobs," you mean glass ones, anthropologie has a small selection of them. about $30.

re: Doorknobs
What about (if I'm getting the name right) "Old Good Things" or something like that...

I also get a catalog at home, something like Renovator's Supply that has 'em.

If p(too) is thinking Renovator's Supply, this is them: http://www.rensup.com/

For various complicated reasons, I like Van Dyke's catalog better, and they do have glass knobs:

There is also a (very large) architectural salvage place called Old Good Things: http://www.oldegoodthings.com/

for old-fashioned door-knobs maybe try lee valley if you're ok with repros.

posted by angelune on 2006-06-08 12:56:15

Yankee magazine is a a good sorce for that kind of thing.

posted by Jean on 2006-06-08 15:27:14

thanks for the links, all. by old-fashioned i mean pretty and metal and possibly victorian (click my name for one i liked), by reasonable i mean not $150. perhaps i'm doomed to e-bay or doorknoblessness.

posted by rasil on 2006-06-08 15:41:47

Rasil try rejuvenation.com or Charleston hardware co.
