Has anyone seen an shelf type object that converts a self in a bookcase so that cd's can be displayed in two rows (such that the back row would be higher/taller than the front)? I've seen a version of this for books in a bookstore display, but have had no luck finding similar for cds.
Any thoughts would be great.
Thank you.

Lauri, here's something from Ikea that might work www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10101&storeId=12&productId=43267&langId=-1&parentCats=10104*10173*10407 . Or you could take the low-tech route and cut a chunk of wood from the lumber yard to length, and stain or paint it to match your shelving.

Hi - I posted a question on a diff thread but I think it got burried. I'm wondering if anyone here has found a way to make room in their small space for an art studio/art making space? I keep thinking there has to be some way to have materials and a workspace available without having to haul everything into storage in between projects. If anyone has pix of their art areas, I'd love to see them. Thanks!

In the movie IN GOOD COMPANY, there was a cool lamp in the girl's dorm room at NYU. Does anyone know where to find a lamp like that one?

Libby -- what type of art are you making? I've seen small apartments with crafting corners, but nothing I thought was really cool or efficient... I did find this a general site for suburbanites organising sewing rooms, but nothing art-specific...

I'm having desk chair angst. Most office chairs swallow me whole, and I'm far more comfortable sitting sideways or crosslegged in them. I've switched to using my only arm chair, which is far more comfortable, but I was more productive in my desk chair. Any suggestions? For now I've put more pillows in my armchair so I sit up straighter and eyeing my lonely desk chair from across the room...

Thanks for the link, Mary. I don't know why it is so hard for me to find example of home art studios for smallish spaces (the few I find seem to be out buildings people add to their property - not areas within apartments). I do mostly mixed media (predominantly 2-dimensional). I'd like to get back to oil painting and such but don't find a small place with poor ventilation and carpeting to work well for that. I would love a live/work art space someday - sigh..............

I have a bookcase that I stained myself. It's teal, for lack of a better word. I am about to purchase an armoire or more shelves for my living room, which is where the bookcase is. So do I stain the armoire the same color? (I am skeptical that it will turn out the same color. I have enough stain left over from the bookcase, but the wood might soak it up differently.) Do I paint it? I have white walls and a "persian" rug (yes, I know they're so over. but I like it. main color is dark blue) and bluey-greeny art. Do I paint it to match the walls? Do I paint it something totally unexpected (like red)? Do I stain it to match my dining table, which is also in my living room? I don't know how to "match" wooden furniture to itself or its surroundings. Please help!

I didn't think you had to match wood to wood -- it's not like a no navy with black rule. You probably will see a slight variation in the stain from piece to piece, unless they're from the same manufacturer. As long as these two pieces won't sit right next to each other, I don't think you'll have a problem -- unless something super strange happens to this second piece, the unusual color will unify them, even if the style is different.
Most people choose blue and green because they make you feel relaxed and peaceful, plus they're easy colors to work with. If your place is too peaceful, you can go with a stain that matches your table, or the red would really punch things up... A good way to look at your house but still kinda remove yourself from it is to take pictures and look at them together. Just like you see every blemish you never knew you had in your personal snapshots, all the flaws in your house will come to the fore if you just take a bunch of photos. It's a good way to declutter too...

people seem to really vary on mixing woods.
do! not! match! them! or some of them should match, i've seen designers say.
kenneth "redesign" brown just matched a brown dining table base, under a glass top, to just the shelf in an armoire, to "tie it in".
so then, matching it to your dining table sounds good.
(i'd make it orange! or red, if there's any of that in the rug, depending on the style of it, and the amount of light in the room, and how much harmony you want...yet anything from a darker teal or dark walnut, to white could work.)

ps
variety is fun but the same teal might work, if u really like it...not very helpful, but it must be something ya gotta a see.
