Maxwell quoth: "When will the apartment ever be finished???"
My bet: 80% completion by October 15, including at least three firm discussions with the appliance supplier. Really nice photos before Hallowe'en. Last-minute Xmas/Hanukkah/winter solstice shopping ends up including some key detail, like one last piece of cabinet hardware or a replacement lamp. Depending on travel schedule, the phrase "Maybe we'll find it in [Paris, Boston, Montauk]" may be spoken instead.
Oops -- 10/15 is a month away. 80% completion by 10/1 is more likely.
serious apartment envy: i was at open houses this weekend (trying to get my little sister to move to park slope so she is nearby and i can keep watch over her sacred virginity) and, while exiting one of the open houses, i saw some guy sitting on the porch of his townhouse with his kids. his door was open and when i looked in, i saw an uber white, modern, almost miami-vice interior of the townhouse. definitely one of the coolest things i had ever seen. brazen bastard that i am, i asked if i could come in and look around. i left hating myself, my sh*t renovation and my contractor. the chunkster was with me and she wants to do it all over again but of course we can't afford it. horrible.
Jonathan, definitely get that guy to post pictures of his apartment - you've got me all curious.
PS: Does your wife have an adorable pet name for you as well? Divulge please.
She used to call me "M&M" which stands for "Misery Maker" (i regret that i am not joking) but that seems to have worn off.
We call our baby "M&M" which stands for "Monster or Munchkin" depending upon his behavior, as in, "today Connor was a monster but we would have much preferred him to have been a munchkin."
where do people get cool shower curtains?
my current one really clashes with the new color scheme. and it's moldy anyway.
i'm looking for something simple, but an interesting graphic would be fine. vinyl, preferably. bed bath and beyond and target seem to only have cutesy ones.
any ideas?
Sprout Home has some geometric patterned shower curtains...

Oppo, you nasty witch: hip haven has a faux textile shower curtain that might interest you

Here is a meat-themed shower curtain that I think complements your personality and, since I imagine you often gnaw on rare short ribs in the shower, might thematically make sense for you:

urban outfitters has neat shower curtains
see: http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/jump.jsp?itemID=299&itemType=CATEGORY&iMainCat=336&iSubCat=299
i got the wallpaper shower curtain in blue, but the white might go with your red scheme.
they might have more options in store, i don't know.
also - Ikea has PVE (rather than PVC) shower curtains, which is good for the environment. And the fabric ones might be available in creamy colors.
Hey Maxwell,
Sorry to see no mention of all the people who were not able to return to their apartments on that fateful day 5 years ago.
I'm thrilled that David won "Design Star"! I thought Alice seemed really nice but didn't seem especially talented.
personally, i'm glad for the lack of 9/11 obsession here. i worked at the WTC and was there that day, and the amount of coverage/media attention/whatever is really getting to me. i hate the fact that, just because others who weren't there want to "commemorate" this "event", i have to live through one of the worst days of my life over and over and over. i couldn't watch television or listen to the radio all weekend, and i've had to avoid my usual blogs and news sites.
this is a design site, not a news outlet, and i'm glad maxwell hasn't found a way to include references to the attacks here today.
and this is mean, but it always really bugged me how much sympathy the people who lived in battery park city got for being temporarily displaced and losing some of their stuff when so many others who were so much needier lost so much more.
I completely agree with the opoponax. My job in fall 2001 involved dealing with mass quantities of grieving survivors; I'm avoiding any of my groups where well-meaning people will post well-meaning little statements on how much they care about 9/11.
If we have to be earnest and concerned, let's do a belated Katrina anniversary fundraiser; there are plenty of people in the poorer parts of New Orleans who could use some help with their tiny homes.
Fuck 9/11. I'm sick of it. I don't need to hear any more "heartfelt" tributes to that terrible day. No other New Yorkers I know want to talk about it or relive it through the news every year. And while I'm at it, fuck CNN for replaying their coverage.
Regardless of whether one wants 9/11 coverage on this site today or not, I think Maxwell has much more important and pressing issues on his mind.
Best of luck for a quick completion of your renovation and a happy and healthy delivery!
oh, and thanks all for the shower curtain suggestions. the sprout ones are exactly what i'm looking for, if only they didn't all have an orange stripe on the bottom. and the other one was pretty cool too -- exactly what i'd go for it it came in black or brown. but you've put me on the right track as far as what i want. now i just have to find it.
Does anyone have any experience with furniture from Door Store? They are the only place we've been able to find an extension dining table that perfectly fits our size needs, but I'm wary of the quality of the stuff there.
Yes, why bother to respect the victims and families of 9/11 ONE DAY here when we can listen to Jonathan bitch, moan, insult, whine and express his "gut reno envy." So nice to "go on living", isn't it?
But dear god people, can you express yourselves without resorting to "fuck 9/11"?? Jesus.Have some couth.
My objection to 9/11 anniversary commemorations is not about ignoring victims and their families. It's about acting as if the whole event is over and done (thus, commemoratable), when we're enmeshed in an ongoing war over it and when we're continuing to constrain Americans' lifestyles because our government hasn't figured out how to stop Al Qaeda.
The sinking of the USS Arizona in Pearl Harbor did not get commemorations until WWII was over.
I don't want to light a candle and say a prayer for the victims (or post a little "my thoughts and prayers are with you" blip on a messageboard) and then go home and feel good about myself. I want to see the underlying problem solved, which is not going to get done through good design of housewares.
At the same time, being able to care about good design of housewares was one of the trivialities that made it nice and comfortable to be an American before 9/11. I like some of the innocence of the old days.
Sorry if I'm being an attack dog, p(too). This particular rant has been building for a while, and you happened to flip the switch.
Please don't blame ME for flipping that switch.
The only thing I will blame you for is my current obsession with zebra striped pillows.
h in china, try newyork.craigslist.org. among many other choices, there will also be a link to sublets and short term rentals.
i don't get why all this commemorative hoo-ha is done in the name of the victims of 9/11. if my own experience and opinion is at all emblematic, all the victims of 9/11 want is to live our lives in peace. in my opinion, all the commemoration is more for people who were not involved in what happened.
Add me to those who were glad to see no memorial here.
My hometown newspaper pulled all the stops out yesterday looking for connections to, "This person lived here only for the first five years of their life...but they died in the September 11 attacks...so we lost someone vital to our community! Really we did!" Tasteless, ghoulish crap.
opoponax you are a jem. :) haven't found the perfect one yet but still on the lookout. :)
P2, "Fuck 9/11" perfectly expresses my feelings over the stage show that rolls around every year. I cannot think of a more succinct and accurate written representation of my feelings. I write it with the upmost hopes that the full gutteral implications of the word comes through. Note that object of the verb is both the date and what has become an abused and terrible proper noun, not the victims.
Door Store stuff is perfectly good quality. I have a sofa from there, and it has held up well.
I have a question! I recently moved into a new apartment and there is like 20 years of grease buildup on the cupboards above the stove. It's not visible, but it's sticky and gross. Any suggestions how I can remove it?
Thanks!
Danielle
Danielle - try TSP - it's sold in the paint aisle at the hardware store (tri-sodium phosphate) and it's supposed to prep surfaces for priming. not very healthy but it should get rid of the grease.
