This site never used to be an LOL kind of place (meow)...is it really changing?

In a truly well-regulated home, it is always Friday... with a nice tri-tip on the BBQ and drinks being served on the patio.

Oops -- guess I've gone native. Make it a nice rosemary-infused chicken on the stainless steel cooker and drinks being served with a view of snowflakes drifting past the office towers (and don't throw snowballs at me!).

It's not Miller time in our household until Saturday afternoon. My girlfriend is in an intensive grad school program that meets...Friday nights!...and Saturday mornings!

It's great that she's doing this, but it really puts a crimp in weekends.

I just got an email from one of the assistant producers of Small Space, Big Style. Apparently they found me through my blog. Too bad my apartment is lacking in the "Big Style" part!

Trilobyte, I used to teach in that kind of program. Your girlfriend has my sympathy, especially if what she mostly wants to do on Sunday is sleep.

Mixing wood finishes in the same room. Hot or not? I have an IKEA malm bed in birch veneer but can't find a desk that I like that would match the color.

God, complaining about "LOL" to cover a slip-up, someone else freaking out about how a new post is referencing "yesterday" but the original reference is still on the front page, everyone jumping on Maxwell for his "steps from the Promenade" attempt at interesting, colorful writing...

Not sure it is THE SITE that is the problem... maybe -- and let's hope-- it's just the last remnants of post-contest snark, and not a trend.

nd in dc--
Mixing wood finishes in the same room: not hot, but not not either. Just keep the mixing simple. Too many flavours makes for jumbled tastebuds. I've got a light wood and dark-to-black wood combo going that works. I've also got a completely mix-n-match room that really doesn't.

IKEA's birch veneer is a rather cool beige (I'm looking right at some)... so if I were looking to mix woods with it, I'd avoid anything that's close-but-no-match (maple or golden oak) and also warm shades (cherry and mahogany). Go all the way to wenge or a cool-based walnut, maybe even black. Or go with a silver or gray finish on your desk.

It helps immensely if one wood is the "background wood" and blends with walls, carpet, or large swatches of textiles, while the other wood is the "accent wood" and stands out.

[WAY off-topic, but what the hell... It's Friday!]

Hey leeds, guido, and all the Latin music fans out there... I just got a copy of a great CD thrown on my desk: "Rhythms Del Mundo - Cuba." Collaborations by members of the Buena Vista Social Club with artists like Coldplay, Arctic Monkeys, U2, Sting, Jack Johnson, Dido & Faithless, Maroon 5, Quincy Jones, Franz Ferdinand, etc. Latin-tinged versions of songs like "Clocks", "She Will Be Loved", "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For", "Ai No Corrida"... Tied to the Artists' Project Earth foundation, a donation of the will be made to the Music Rising Foundation from the proceeds. Musically, this is one of the coolest albums I've come across in a while. More info: http://www.rhythmsdelmundo.com/

A few threads ago Deb of Oz {?)linked to garage cabinets (for people like, Jay Leno, maybe.) I called the company and Mr. Haas, himself, talked about his product. He expressed his surprise in the interest of women, who see it as an interior/ kitchen furnishing. It is expensive and built to support motors, not mixers, but he did seem interested in modifications that might make it more versatileand affordable. Is there anything like it elsewhere? Anybody know? garageshowroom.com Sorry, I don't how to make those links people put in.
