On AT a few days ago, was a link to gel fireplace reviews (from another mag...can't remember.) The staff determined that the best 'fake' fireplace was the DVD "Happy Holiday Hearth" (which really made me laugh.) But, being a weirdo, and having $8.00, I ordered a copy and let me tell you, it's great! Not only does my office love it, but at home it makes you sleepy (just like a real fire....)

i have a question.

i'm considering buying a condo and it has white cabinets in the kitchen. is it possible to replace the doors with more "colorful" ones from ikea?

or do the cabinets have to be ripped out as well? they're pretty new and seem to be pretty well made.

big d.
It all depends on where the existing cabinets came from. If they're Ikea, no problem. Order new exciting doors in the same sizes and reinstall.

If they're not Ikea, problems. They might be off-the-shelf items, in which case the manufacturer might have other product lines with compatible sized doors. Or you could go all out and have custom doors made.

Question re: Ikea cabinet doors. Most kitchen cabinets are standard sizes. However, Ikea doesn't always follow "standard" sizing. Are their cabinets standard size, or different? I am interested too.

You can also cover the cabinet doors or paint them out.

I have a similar problem with my cabinets. The person I bought my co-op from re-did the kitchen with solid wood cabinets. Unfortunately, it's clear from the cabinet layout that she never cooked or tried to use the kitchen in any functional sense. Things like a 42" base cabinet for a 25" sink. Frames on all the cabinet fronts. Doors that open the wrong way. Fixed shelves in the base cabinets which make it impossible to put pots and pans away.

So for the last year and half I've been trying to come up with a way to justify getting rid of practically new oak cabinets that just don't work.

I can't believe I'm saying this but is it just me or is Design on a Dime getting better? Maybe practice really does make (sorta) perfect.

david, just an idea -

where i live there is a place called "re-store," run by habitat for humanity. they accept (i'm not sure what their exact policy is) architectural salvage of all kinds - there is probably somebody out there who would be thrilled to come across your cabinets, were you to rip them out and donate them...

I saw a website on AT featuring large canvas (computer generated) art for reasonable prices. I ordered 5 contemporary samples from the site ($10 each) to check out the quality before ordering a huge canvas. I haven't heard back nor can I remember the name of the company. AND, I can't find the company on AT anymore. You guys remember everything -- help!

This was not the site that featured Warhol-ish versions of one's own photos.

I was just flipping through the channels while cooking dinner and saw MGR and SKGR (and little Ursula, too!) on Inside Edition. My phone rang as soon as the clip was over. It was my mom talking about how a couple in New York with "the most adorable baby" was living in an apartment smaller than her closet, lol!

Two questions:
1) how do I submit a 'Good Question'?
2) how do link my flickr Apartment Therapy page to my ID here? I want my name to appear in color so you can click it and see my apartment photos!

Click chick - not sure about submitting a Good Question, but to link to your photos, just put the URL in the URL box below "Name' and 'Email address' when you post a comment. You can change it each time you post a comment.

Sandy - No problem!

Would you please let us know what happens when you speak to them? I was considering one of the prints, but I don't want to deal with them if they are unreliable.

David -- The way you justify getting rid of almost-new cabinets that just don't work is you say, "These cabinets just don't work -- they are making my life miserable." Then you put an ad on Craig's List, looking for someone who will remove the cabinets and take them away.

There's always someone with a truck who will do the demo for the sake of free cabinets. If you hate CL, put a flyer in your local coffeehouse (or, better yet, in a coffeehouse in a neighborhood that's getting a lot of rehab work).
