I am thinking about getting the Malm bed from IKEA- anyone have this and have feedback?

Question for the mob... What decorative "touch" in your home has made the most difference in making it feel homey?

my tattered, grungy old armchair and ottoman with blankets thrown over each to hide the grunge.

Getting stuff up on the walls. Art that I have collected over time and on trips makes everything feel like home.

OK, I'm trying this question once again:

I am looking for nice legs for a two-by-four wood table I recently purchased. I would either like a single base for the center that could support those dimensions or four legs. Any thoughts on where I can purchase individual legs?

Thanks!

you can buy legs one by one at IKEA...

Homey is in the eye of the beholder, so other people might find something different in my apartment to define "homey", but for me, imposing my will onto my own walls with wall treatments is what makes me feel like I'm in my very own home.

I have a brand new high-end laptop bag for sale on Craigslist. Click on my name or go to CL for description. Please, somebody buy this!

Like Anne, it's got to be pictures for me. When I hung a whole wall of individually framed postcards in my study, it made all the difference.

Homey feelings in my place are - candlelight and dim accent lighting, bed full of pillows and down comforter, my cats, a balcony full of twinkle lights.

Jen. I have the Malm bed (with the attached bedside tables). I love the look of it, especially for the price. It's a pretty sturdy piece, including the slats that support the mattress. I think this bed is one of the best deals IKEA has going.

i keep seeing the malm bed in various design and style publications, as well in my friends' homes. it does look good, and if i could afford it, i'd buy one for myself too!

The MALM bed is heavy.
When you put it together --- watch your toes!

I wish it had a higher headboard.

Thanks for the suggestions Anne. That's great! Anyone know of someplace in the city?

carla - what about restoration hardware? and maybe some random places down between the LES and chinatown.

Carla,
I have to reccommend Natural Furniture in Portland Oregon. You can buy table legs separately and either finish them yourself to match your table, or pay them to finish them for you. Here's their website:

There's a little bit of info about "john greenleaf" table legs that come in all different styles on the page I've linked to. They are really nice there and I've bought from them and had good experience with them. Surely they ship?

Oh boy! I just ordered the Hand Carved Bed Frame platform bed from Brocade Home. Have been waffling between that one and the Silhouette Bed Frame for a while. I'm getting rid of the futon.

3 things that make my home 'homey': framed photos of friends/family, art and tapestries from several trips abroad, and nice, big full plants. My big palms get the most compliments.

Ditto Anne. I don't think a place ever looks like home until something is on the walls. Even if only living in a place temporarily, bang in a couple of nails and hang something for your own sanity. Not a Spice Girls poster, though.

I'm currently renting a 400 sq ft. bachelor apartment. The only distinct rooms are the bathroom and the kitchen. The cost of living in Toronto, Canada is quite high and this is the best apartment I can afford.

I mainly use the apartment for sleeping, eating, and working (I'm a freelance web designer. My boyfriend, who often stays in my apartment also does traditional painting and airbrushing in this space. As much as I would like to get a bigger apartment with more rooms, I have to make use of the 400 sq ft. that I am provided. What's the best way to divide my apartment?

Here's a floor plan for reference. I drew that plan for a Feng Shui practitioner, hence the labels.

Thanks!

The "hominess" input is fascinating and helpful...

The subtext here is that I'm not quite satisfied with how the new living room has come together, and I can't put a finger on why, so I'm fishing for clues.

MsKatieKat - you should submit that to the AT mailbox as a question.

wende--
I think "hominess" and "patina" are related. You just moved not too long ago, right? I think hominess "happens" as part of the settling in process. It might be especially odd to you now if the space you moved into is newer than the space you left.

Make sure your favorite stuff is visible. Make sure lights are on dimmers, and that you have "layers" of lighting. Textiles for softness and color.

But no doubt hominess will find you! From what we've come to learn about you, no doubt your home will reflect your heart, spirit and creativity in no time.

carla--
If looking for a pedestal base, go to a restaurant supply company.

Pixie:

Sorry about that. I couldn't find a visible link that says so (it was very early in the morning!).

I just now found the "email us" link. thanks for letting me know.
