Reaching out to the crowd: I've searched AT but can't seem to find the entry about home organizing labels. It was a company that sells sets of organization labels in different categories (like garage, home office, bath, etc.). I can't remember if they were rub-on or stick-on. Any ideas? I will probably end up making my own but recall having a few "oh yeah!" moments when looking at their lists. And they were very simple and pretty.

Not sure, but I think I saw them when I was at the Container Store awhile ago....

I was in New York recently and was completely taken by the cut flowers available everywhere. Especially, what appeared to be cut stems of cotton. I did an internet search and have come up short. Does anyone know the technical name for this and a source for it?

Chances are the flowers you saw were flown in from overseas or wherever. Maybe contact your local greenmarket?

SALE at APT:

I just received a promotional email from the store APT, for a:

PRIVATE SAMPLE SALE

There is no promotional code, but the sale prices are not available on their website, it says only in their showrooms, or by phone, and mention the sale:

1-800-694-9164

to get the sale prices.

I'm personally not in the market, but I thought I'd share.

I think I'm familiar enough to the regulars here, but for the record- I have no relationship with the store APT, and I'm not spamming and could care less whether you patronize them are not. I'm just sharing information.

I have a chair question for everyone...

Are the Herman Miller (or Modernica repro) Fiberglass Chairs comfortable?

Thanks in advance!

The Compact reminded me of last year's Simple Living discussion:

I'm not advocating this, just posting it as food for thought.

Did AT ever find out what Patty and Chris (from the Patty and Chris Inside out House Tour) do for a living?

I'm hoping this isn't a totally dumb question, but I am wondering what others think about optimum height for safety reasons when burning candles and such, when they are placed on bookshelves.

How much space to they need above them, to prevent them from blackening the shelf above, as well as (obviously) to be a safe distance for flammability reasons.

My shelves are about 14 inches tall, and tea lights seem fine, but I'm wondering if I am misguided even in that thought.

Any thoughts?
thanks!

candles - I use the old heat test. I place my hand at the bottom of the shelf above and if I can feel heat then it's not going to work. Also, remember that even if you can't feel the heat you may end up with a soot mark after a while.

Mat -

though i don't own one, i must say yes. i have the panton chair its very comfortable, oddly enough. i think its because the shape is contoured to fit the curves of your body (same with Herman Miller). my boyfriend even agrees -- another shock!

Hi Everybody!

Okay, I'm looking to save on counter space. Has anyone seen magnetic kitchen canisters that you can install to the bottom of cabinets. I have the smaller one for spices on the wall above my stove, but I'm looking for something that is large (and strong) enough to hold my sugar, flour, etc.

Thanks for your help!

Another SALE email, this time at BoConcepts.

20% off all "living chairs", I suppose that means bar-stools and dining chairs are not included.

I had a similar problem -- or desire -- and looked into the under the cabeinet stuff. In the end I found I had enough space between my counter top and the bottom of the cabinet to install a shallow shelf -- just deep enough for spice bottles, toasters, coffee makers, and stuff like that. I did install and under the cabinet light so I could see what I put on the shelf....

Hi,
What do you guys think of the B-Pop DWR chairs? Comfortable? They are on sale now.

Thanks Linda!

I've seen a couple used on my local CL for a reasonable price, I'll have to pick one of them up.

On my Japanese language podcast today they were talking about Ousouji - the year-end cleaning. You don't just clean, you get rid of all the stuff you don't need or want anymore. What a great tradition!

I just bought a big LCD monitor and a quiet computer case and moved the computer from the bedroom into the livingroom. Now I can sit in front of the fire while on the comp. The monitor sits on the coffee table in front of the sofa, and I sit with my back against the sofa and legs under the table. It works really well.

The only problem is that the monitor blocks the TV. If I want to watch TV instead, I have to lift the monitor off the table. There are also cords and wires and things behind the coffee table (ie in the middle of the livingroom floor).

I'd like to replace the TV with the monitor. The monitor would need to stay close to the sofa for when it's being used as a monitor.

I'm not sure how to lay this out. How can I make it so that it's easy to convert the monitor to "TV mode" and ensure that it's visible to everyone even though it's close to the sofa, without moving the coffee table around all the time? How can I get rid of the wire mess? I have a wireless network. Used a wireless mouse and keyboard for a while, but they weren't very precise. And if only we had wireless electricity! =)

I've heard of people getting a really big screen for the wall and then using a smaller screen near the sofa for close-up work. A bit expensive though.

Any ideas?
