This site, though a continuous source of inspiration, has made me more and more , um, pissy, shall I say. Seems soooo clique-y and my posts/questions NEVER elicit a response, retort, or rejoinder. Is there some secret club handshake I need to know? Do I need to know somebody who knows somebody?

posted by clearly an outsider on 2007-01-09 09:45:05

dear outsider, read between the posts and ignore the cliques. don't expect validation from a website, but by all means keep posting if that makes you happy. you are putting yourself out there bearing witness to those who will never meet you or respond to you directly, but your posting is read by the majoity of the other posters.

see, someone responded to you!

posted by patrick on 2007-01-09 10:24:15

I've had many a post never responded to. If it's a question that I really want an answer to, sometimes I repost later and get a response. Sometimes not. Sometimes I feel autistic. (no offense to anyone.) But, that's show biz/the internet.

posted by Pixie on 2007-01-09 10:45:30

What's your question? I'll take a stab.

posted by matilda on 2007-01-09 10:50:06

Um, yeah, I think sometimes people don't respond because (gasp!) they don't know. People ask some obscure questions on here sometimes. Not to say that yours was obscure but not everything can be answered (this has happened to me too). Try reposting a couple of times and maybe in different places before you get all huffy at a bunch of anonymous strangers.

On the other side of the coin, I've sometimes wondered (and I've seen others voice the same thing) if some of the people that ask questions go back to see if anyone has answered them. Thinking that no one is reading the answers can sometimes discourage people from answering. Not that I'm saying you've done this, "clearly an outsider", but it can happen. Try this thread with your question, and see what happens!

clearly an outsider,
sometimes I get no responses because only I see the relevancy in something...

posted by Pixie on 2007-01-09 11:51:12

Dear clearly:

I rather like Pixie's gentle and gentile response, and do second it. However, I would like to add that many of us don't necessarily have all the time we'd like to respond to every deserving post. Furthermore, and perhaps more important, one of the great things about AT is that for the most part it's only the people who know what they're talking about who respond.

i always get a response. but i think that's more to do with my name than anything.

people are such size queens. :>

big d., so you must be part of the clique.

posted by Pixie on 2007-01-09 12:28:41

I would also suggest doing at least a cursory search of the archives. Sometimes a question has been asked and answered so many times that it finally gets ignored ("modern sliding doors" anyone?)

Faith restored. Thanks to all for taking the time to stroke my admittedly fragile ego.

If I want something on craigslist and respond to an ad, do I have to be some kind of registered member to buy something or is registering just for selling? That great vintage stove on the slinks this morning inspired me to check out the local offerings. I tried to read all the rules but couldn't find the answer.

Hi there;
In my plethora of free time over the X-Mas holidays I checked out the other AT sites. As a Canadian living in SW Ontario I found I probably had a lot more in common with AT Chicago (ie. styles of buildings etc.) Just wondering if it is on the AT New York site that all the Canucks hang out or is it region specific (like maybe Vancouverites have more in common with AT San Francisco) Also I hate to sound like a whiner but there is a heck of a lot of Canadians on this site. Has there ever been any talk of an Apartment Therapy Canada site?? Especially as we don't even have the same stores as they have in the US??

posted by Squidface on 2007-01-09 13:04:43

kate: no - craigslist is just a way to connect people with other people. When you click on the link in the ad it will open your e-mail and you'll send a message directly to the seller. If you're worried about using your real contact info right off the bat, I'd recommend checking with your ISP to see if you can create disposable e-mail addresses. I've had great luck both buying and selling. If you can't readily creat a disposable e-mail address, try one of the free e-mail sites and just make an addres to use when you're doing initial business with strangers.

"...outsider",

What clique? I didn't know there was one on this site. As far as not getting responses, welcome to the club. There are many times I ask and don't get a response. I keep asking, though, until someone tells me to shut up.

Re: craigslist - you don't need to register, just click on the email address at the top of the post to respond. You need to register to be on the forums but that's about it.

Speaking of not getting an answer, I'm going to post this question again in hopes of a response or 4:

Does anyone know where I can go to look and select a piece of reclaimed wood? I see all kinds a places on the web but none seem to be in NYC.

posted by anne on 2007-01-09 13:23:43

Clearly an outsider - just don't listen to the negative stuff. I love to answer questions so can you post yours?

posted by matilda on 2007-01-09 13:30:58

Thanks for replies. I did click and respond to the seller, but wasn't sure if that is what to do, since there has been no response, but maybe they are slow to reply or the item is gone already.

Squidface,

I hear your pain. Hearing about great shops in Brooklyn and great online retailers that only ship domestically is frustrating. On that level, having a Canadian outpost of AT would be great. On the other hand, we're a large country too, with plenty of region-specific concerns...sigh

posted by Michelle of Montreal on 2007-01-09 13:57:39

anne-
what is reclaimed wood?

posted by sara on 2007-01-09 14:16:24

Sara, reclaimed wood is from previous structures such as barns, old houses or interiors of old houses. It's the green way to go and the wood can be really beautiful. I need to find a piece to use as a table top.

posted by anne on 2007-01-09 14:34:47

Squidface: I hear ya. Back a few months ago, when there was a poll about setting up a new AT site, there were a couple of Canadian possibilities listed, but Boston won out over all the others (when will the Boston site be up and running, just in passing??)

As a Canadian smack dab in the middle of the prairies, I don't have access to a lot of the stores that someone in Montreal, Ontario, Vancouver, even Edmonton or Calgary, would have, so I just read everything, take what I can from it, and make do. As Michelle said, there are so many regions, that having just one Canadian site wouldn't answer everything -- but it could deal with the fact that we don't have many of the stores that people on AT take for granted.

(That being said, I tend to focus on the New York site, but I read all the others, too.)

I have a gorgeous bay window in my apartment, through which the whole world can see in. I've put a picture in my signature. I was hoping someone might have an idea about window treatments. I'd like to avoid blinds (I never close them).

Thank you!

posted by Anthea on 2007-01-09 16:53:11

that reminds me.

i'm a transplanted new yorker living in dallas but i will always be fond of my nyc AT'ers.

however, where do the texans hang? i need texas-style inspiration.

nisha, I looked for the wood bowl reference on design sponge but couldn't find it. I went all the way back to the beginning of Dec. Was it further back?

posted by anne on 2007-01-09 17:45:48

Um, Anthea your bay window is awesome. That whole apartment rocks. Soaked in sunlight. You could always do blinds on the bottom half of the windows, so there would still be the skyline view. I left another suggestion on Flickr.

posted by Lady J on 2007-01-09 18:59:24

Anthea,
How about top-down shades to give you a privacy when needed, but still let in light? And, if you forget about them, and leave them halfway up, you'll still get part of that view.

Anne,

I know I have read about a place in Brooklyn, but cannot for the life of me remember the name, so not sure how helpful that is. Some of the furniture designers (also in Brooklyn) who work with reclaimed wood seem to use this place.

So, while I can't actually be too helpful, I guess I can give you hope that it exists in NYC.

posted by Fiona on 2007-01-10 07:26:38

anthea, have you looked at the AT archives for the medical kind of curtain rod in the ceiling thingy that would wrap around the bay for a curtain?
(i know that was highly tenchnotically descriptive-- sorry, i'm off my game today).
maybe someone knows what the heck i'm talking aobut...?

posted by pc on 2007-01-10 10:32:33

pc (those are my initials, too!):

click my name for a great resource for ceiling track curtains. It's called Cubicle Curtain Factory and there are more than just the hospotal colors (dingy white, faded scrubs green).
