good morning! does anyone know of any websites that show good examples of outside spaces? similar to the house tours here, but featuring patios/decks/backyards? i'm looking for good photos for inspiration. (like i need something else to distract me at work!)
thanks!

I've always found good ideas and pics on the sunset magazine website, you might enjoy that. That's the closest I can think of right now.

Hi all,

I am setting up a home office in a VERY small living room and have two options, neither of which I love very much.

I can:

a) try to find a very small, affordable corner desk and small, ergonomically feasible chair...

or

b) set up my office on the breakfast bar and hope I can find a comfortable bar stool/drafting chair to work from.

I like option "b" because it's a better use of space--I will probably never eat at this breakfast bar--but I am sure "a" will be more comfortable.

Anyone have any ideas or resources?

I recently got the Calligaris "Way" stool for my kitchen counter--I find them really comfortable, which I couldn't say for a lot of stools given my butt is not tiny! Comfort was a huge priority for me as I don't have a separate dining table. I got them at Jensen Lewis.

I might get a high drafting "stool" from a place like Utretch Art Supplies. The stools are designed for sitting and working for long periods of time.

brooke (nc)-

I have found some great, modern landscape pictures on British gardening websites. Sorry, I don't have any specific recommendations off the top of my head, but I found them doing google searches.

Does anyone know what the best method is to dispose of lamp oil? I have an oil lamp (glass bottle with some decorative flowers in it, lamp oil (parrafin based?), + long wick), and it makes me excessively nervous to burn it, as my roommate has a very unpredictable cat. Since it makes me anxious and it's particularly pleasant design-wise either, I'd like to pitch it. Are there any guidelines for getting rid of such oil, or no?

Hey Olivia,

I'm not sure if there are guide lines for lamp oil but I would dispose of the oil like I would a cooking oil. Or do what *everybody* else does: go to the nearest forest preserve and dump it. JK

I would get a grocery store plastic bag dump the lamp, etc in and tie it up and throw it in the garbage.

Maybe you could Freecycle the lamp and the oil to someone who feels comfortable burning it.

Olivia:

I'd list it under "Free Stuff" on Craigslist. It will be gone within a day.

I would NOT dispose of it as if it were cooking oil. It's a petroleum product, and I'd dispose of it the way you'd get rid of paint or cleaning supplies. But I'm sure someone on Craigslist would be happy to take it off your hands.

I'm just sharing this because it's killing me not buying it:

Any interested Montrealers should snap this up.

I think I need a second apartment to decorate...

Hello Brooke!I don't know of ant AT-type garden tours (sadly!) but if you want to take heps' advice you could try www.flowerbulbs.co.uk. Go to the "Public" section, ignore all that twee "Make Britain Beautiful" rubbish and there are links in the In The Garden section to lots of very grand and inspirational famous gardens. For things less traditional and posh, you could try the City Gardener microsite at www.channel4.com (use the site map a-z bit to find it)for more urban, small-scale stuff.

Lia, why not try a computer armoire? It holds everything you'd need for a small office, but closes up when you're not using it to look like furniture. It's the perfect convertible piece for a small space. Here are a few right around $600 you might like. Otherwise, Google "computer armoire" and you'll find a ton of options in varying price ranges.
