I would like to build or install some shelving in my large, south facing kitchen window to grow herbs. Unfortunately, the sides of the window frame (jamb?) are beveled so the shelves may need to be freestanding (sitting on the window sill) or hanging from above. Also, space is tight, so simply putting shelves on the floor in front of the window wouldn't work. The window is maybe 4 to 5 inches deep.

Does anyone have any ideas or resources that might help? Thanks!

Anthropologie updated their site, folks. And Spiegel has a whole set of new modern lamps for their spring collection.

I noticed that the emeco counter stool comes in a red powdercoated version. Anyone know where in ny or la in a real store I might be able to see the red version? (I can't even find a picture online)

www.betterinteriors.in -

on my obsessive search on google on indian interiors because of all its talk the above site is what i found. very sad to note that most of its furnishings looks very european - but the integration of colors is wonderful.

avocado-- no advice, but what a great idea! do you have more than one kitchen window?
my only fear would be that if it's your only window, the shelves might block your ventilation.

I also have a kitchen window question: I am in desperate need for a modern, cool, bright, interesting cotton panel for my window, something Marimekko-ish, but already in shade form, like a panel or even roman shades. Bright & bold are the operatives here. Anyone have any suggestions?

nicole: I got one like it a couple of years ago at pottery barn--but the 'flip side' was actually a lighter shade of green. Discontinued a while ago. The green was the hot color a couple of years ago--Much harder to find now. Try Garnet hill.

just a shopping heads-up. someone a few weeks ago was looking for glass domes. I was just in the Pottery Barn/ Williams Sonoma outlet store in Riverhead (NY) and they had some tall ones for $15! Happy Hunting!

Loli—
I think that's the Plaza coverlet from Crate and Barrel in Aloe. I've got it—it's definitely two shades of green, though the lighter one is quite light and lemongrassy....

avocado, what if you installed a curtain rod above the window trim and then you could hang a bunch of small pots of herbs from the rod, each at a different height? This would look interesting and would allow you to hang and remove the pots at will, plus you wouldn't put holes in your ceiling. You could also use the curtain rod for other things like window treatments, or even those pretty blown glass decorations that some people hang in their windows on fishing line.

I also saw a person once who didn't have a window will at all over her kitchen window, so she just hung a shelf wide enough to span across the glass and the trim and attach to the walls on either side. (actually I think she had installed two shelves, one above the other) She could still open the window, too. It sounds odd, but it looked really neat. Just a few thoughts off the top of my head.

avocado - click on my name to see these window shelves from Lee Valley - it says you can create the equivalent of a second sill on your window.

Thanks for the suggestions. Angelune, those shelves are exactly what I was thinking about. However, I will have to think about the function of the window (they open in) and may have to go with Monica's awesome suggestion. Thanks again!

angelune and avocado, those shelves are so cool and that is very much like the look I saw at that person's house. Excellent find, angelune, I've added that site to my bookmarks! Thanks!

My problem is that I love so many colors and so many styles I am having trouble deciding on what I want in my home. When I make a style tray I end up with tons of aqua blues and lt greens I am just afraid these colors will be too "cold".

How do you "decide" on a palette and style?? Any suggestions??

Actually, blue and green sound rather beachy and summery to me. But then again I like blue and green stripes on a shirt with a white background.

You might toss in some yellow.

Or some red-orange.

Or you might warm things up by using nubby textures and matte finishes.

I second JonathanB! I love blue/green combos as well as red/orange. Learning to mix them is key. It's easily done. What's wrong with aqua/lt. green? There are many shades to both and however cool or warm the tone the colors will always be instantly soothing to the eye. I've used variations of that color combo in PowerPoint presentations for years.

And hot pink makes a striking accent color to that combo. There is yellow based hot pink - which is actually hot; and there is blue based hot pink - which is vibrant and soothing at the same time.

Also, white (and gray) as a base color does a lot to display a variety of colors to big effect. It sort of neutralizes the contrast and shows each color to advantage.

For colour palettes, I love the resource at Colour Lovers. It's aimed at print and web, I think, but it's great for ideas on what colours to make a palette zing.
