are vornado fans loud?

we have ACs in the bedrooms, but not in the common areas. i really need to cool down the dining/living room, which is stuck in a dead-zone of air. will the vornado be disturbingly loud, like my jet-engine "king of fans" from home despot?

i have a small vornado fan in my bedroom that is amazing. though, they do make noise, it's not a big machiney noise, mainly just wind.

I have two Vornado fans and just adore them. They're powerful, high-quality, and good-looking enough that they double as decor.

This one is in my bedroom. It's the louder of the two but, like homo_wner said, it just sounds like wind... not clanging, rattling, or industrial. I sleep with it on low (turned upwards to face the ceiling) and sometimes, when I get in bed, can't even tell if I remembered to turn it on or not.

This one is in my office. It oscillates and pushes more air than the other one, and is quieter. Not to mention that it's gorgeous! The reviewers on Amazon don't seem to care for it, though. I don't use it all day every day so it's possible it doesn't stand the test of time-- but for my purposes, I think it's fantastic.

How do you clean dark walls? I just tried using a moist cloth napkin to wipe off some scruff marks, and some of the chocolate paint came off with the napkin! Now what? :(

What's the difference btw a fan that filters the air and an air purifier? Does an air purifier push air like a fan? I don't want to buy both.

Also, can a fan really cool the temp? I saw one at HD that has a digital temp reading that you can change.

get a sample pot and paint over the hole carefully? it'll look bogus and streaky when wet, but once the paint 'lays down' it'll look better. i have a theory that this has less to do with the darkness of your walls and more to do with a paint adhesion issue. the causes of poor paint adhesion are myriad, but it doesn't really matter since you can't fix it now. hopefully one of the freakazoids from the GAH! GERMS! thread about the soap holders can drop some 'ocd gentle cleaning' science.

Does anyone on here have any experience with any of the new and much-hyped green countertop alternatives in their kitchens? I am curious to see how people are liking them, as I am starting to shop around and a lot of them are shockingly expensive. Any particularly good deals? As much as I'd love to fork over for some of the $200/square foot alternative materials, that is not what my budget will bear. Any advice would be great, thanks!

kdkaboom,

I recently got a vornado and liked it so much that I'm ordering another for the living room. The one I have isn't silent, but it's *much* quieter than our old box fan and moves air with greater efficiency. (It's currently keeping me relatively comfy in 94 degree NYC heat.)

I didn't get a fancy/pretty one: http://www.vornado.com/products/circulators/733b.htm

I'd recommend them.

Forbidden Fruit-

I know someone who painted their ceramic tile backsplash and it came out quite well. She used a special primer made especially to use on ceramic tile, an oil-based paint, and several coats of varathane to seal it. Hope that helps!

I'd think painting a backsplash would be different than painting the floor...
