i'm on the hunt for a cool magazine rack...but size is a factor.

i need it for the space between the back of the bathroom door and the wall. but that's only about 4 inches of space (depthwise). most good looking magazine racks i've seen are either swooping and large, wall-mounted (no can do), or small but fugly.

basically, tall or wide is fine - it just has to be shallow... any ideas?

Does anyone know of a more attractive alternative to the plastic under-chair office mats. I know these also come in wood laminate, but that just looks silly on top of an area rug?

Good morning! A couple of weeks ago one of the other design blogs had a somewhat blurry snapshot someone had taken of a sign in the window of a store that was being remodeled. It was red and white and had three icons with captions, the first of which was a bulldozer that said "create openings." Does anyone remember where I saw this?

kd-- Have you looked at TopDeq? They have lots of magazine/brochure solutions. But "not wallmounted" will be a problem, I fear. Can you mount it to the door?

Boyfriend announced yesterday that we need a kitchen timer. I've been ogling all the great ones for the last 2 years, and now I can't find any. Specific requirement: it must be clippable, as we have a pot rack at the ideal placement to clip one.

Hello. I am about to start an entire kitchen renovation and started to look at new appliances. I've narrowed it to 2 bottom-freezer refrigerators.
Has anyone used the Fisher Paykel 17.3 Cu. Ft. or the GE Profile 19.5 Cu. Ft. refrigerators?

I love my timer from Polder, model 212. Follow my name for the link. You should be able to find it at any kitchen store - I believe that mine came from Broadway Panhandler. I love that fact that it has multiple alarm settings - I startle easily and will jump right out of my skin at "normal" alarm sounds. This one has a vibrating setting that is audible from another room, but in a non-jarring kind of way. It also has a clip and a magnetized back.

P2, I'm looking for wide and shallow . . .

an under-counter mounted kitchen drawer to store my vast collection of gadgets like lemon squeezers and nut crackers.

I have a narrow (about 18"deep) wood counter with space underneath. I want to put something on tracks or a swinging . . something.

patrick 2.0: thanks for your recommendation...i still haven't found what i'm looking for (because the streets have no names) but i will keep looking! i might have to reconsider mounting one to the wall...there's so many more options that way!

nathalie: i don't have any experience with the fisher & paykel fridges, but i went with all GE appliances since i *knew* they were quality (plus, they have very easy warranty and service stuff just in case...)

Nothing comes to mind for your tray/drawer situation, but I'll keep thinking/looking.

Wondering if something from Humanscale, the ergo-desk people, or California closets might have a piece to modify. Did you also look at Elfa, via Container Store?

Seems the challenge is you need the slider/rails to be sort of "ceiling mounted"... (ceiling being the underside of the counter), right?

what do y'all do with the hangers that come from dry cleaners? i feel guilty about throwing them away but at the same time, i don't need them.

Dunno about you, but my dry cleaner people happily thank me when I drag my old hangers back to them in one hand with my new laundry to be dropped off in the other. Sometimes I'll drop off the hangers even if I have nothing else to leave with them.

mag rack: i used an ikea wine bottle holder. i can't take credit as i saw it used like that in the show room but it's great. i just roll up the mags and stick them in a slot. it's the stainless, wall mount one.

hello all- i am looking to purchase a classic eames lounge chair (used), but have a very narrow hallway (27").. does anyone know if these chairs can be disassembled, or if the arms/legs come off? I'd hate to have to hoist it up the fire escape. thanks!

nathalie, I've got the Fisher & Paykel bottom freezer and so far no problems (only installed in December, however). I thought that the freezer part being a door rather than a pullout would annoy me, but I'm OK with it. For my kitchen, I really liked the dimensions (and price) of the F&P. Only issue I have is that the fridge door has some serious suction on it and I sometimes have to yank pretty hard to get it open.

I have a GE profile bottom-freezer in that size. I'm not a big fan. It is not very space efficient. Right now I'm in the process of fitting in a Samsung Quatro. It's only a few inches bigger on two sides and has 1/3 more space.

Does anybody have experience with dying a piece of furniture?

I found a Herman Miller chair on the curb and would like to dye it because it has faded so badly.

I don't know the name of the chair but it is a foam chair on a plastic base with blue fabric upholstery. The only time I have seen these chairs are when they are grouped together to form a sofa. There was a Living Etc. issue that featured a writer from the show Lost. His home was a converted barn in LA. His couched was comprised of these chairs.

Re-upholstering would not be worth it as it would probably exceed the value of the chair. So if anyone has any tips for simply dying the fabric intact I would be greatly appreciative.

ckg: my brother designed and built the dining room table. he got an amazing deal on gorgeous chocolate'n'vanilla walnut up in pennsylvania. we had that wood in his room for YEARS until we started renovating. we also used it on the built-in radiator cover (the top and "seat") - it's a great size table, rolls off to the side or anywhere we want it, and is pure sexy :)



lisa in austin & lisa: are you two seperate lisas? heheh, thanks to you both! i love love love the linked magazine rack, and i also saw on a design show how they used the wine rack (freestyle, maybe?) - i'm thinking of doing just that in the living room somewhere, but the bathroom is tricky.....such an odd size i need. more like a thin "inbox" than a mag rack! i'll just have to get crafty :)

about magazine rack - maybe mount two hooks like umbra's peel low on the door? wouldn't fit much though, i'm afraid.
i know Toronto's Chinatown has a huge variety of baskets in all shapes and finishes. perhaps a very dark narrow tall weave is to be found? just doesn't seem to go with your design that much.

rasil: i dropped them off back at the dry cleaners. they were happy to take them back.

For magazines, I have a wine rack from pier1 that has four spaces in a 5-6 inch wide tower. You roll up the magazines--a couple can fit in the space for one bottle (and it sits on the floor). I think I paid around $10 on sale...

I don't know where you are, but here in NYC you can recycle those hangers. They go in the bag with the metal, plastic and glass.

About that drawer, look for either a keyboard shelf and modify it or just buy the glides used to mound a keyboard shelf. They are the kind that mount "on the ceiling" as you say. I know I've seen just the glides for sale online...

I have the F&P bottom freezer and love it. one word of warning though: Make sure your kitchen will allow you to fully open the door. We have a galley kitchen and didn't estimate that the door would not clear the oven in front of it. It doesn't matter if it opens to the left or right, it can't clear and, therefore, we can't open the freezer drawers or fridge crisper drawers.
In a word: duh.
We had to move it to a completely different area of the kitchen.

For a shallow magazine rack in the bathroom, I use one of those plastic hanging-file holders that normally sit on a shelf or desk. My mom has one even shallower than that, tucked betwen the toilet and the wall, that's made out of thick lucite ... but it's really old and I have no idea where it originally came from.

My big old fridge in my small galley kitchen was like that, before I renovated this summer. Let's hear it for counter-depth fridges! (Mine's a Summit.)

Are there any online stores that sell cool new york/manhattan/brooklyn house items? Dishes, knickknacks, etc? It needs to be online because I sadly am not in the area.

I also would like online stores of little kitschy items, I don't know why I am having such a hard time. Google is failing me!

I'm a huge fan of the timer I use at work in the lab. Four channels and each has a different beep so you can tell them apart. It has a clip and a magnet on the back and the clip can be used to make it stand upright on the counter if you like. It counts up and down and if you run over time, it starts counting up again, which is exceedingly useful when you come back late to your experiments ... I mean cooking.

These are the number one item "borrowed" from lab other than office supplies.

C try fish eddy's for dishes. They have all kinds of kitshy themes. Our name is mudd also do NYC pieces. Not super stylish, but ueber-cute.
