anyone use efstyle to order furniture?
I'm seeing very mixed reviews on http://www.xomreviews.com/efstyle.com
Lots of positives until VERY negative bad experiences pop up -- so you have to wonder if shilling is at work
the good thing I'm seeing on the xomreviews site is that they put an IP address next to the poster's name, so you can see if they're all coming from the same place or not

Morning All,
I just got my May issue of Domino in the mail. Do all of you also have a huge, thick cigarette advertisement on page 61? Which century are we in? When I purchased my subscription, I didn't imagine I was giving money to a magazine that would promote the killing of human lives.

I tried to email a Through My Window to maxwell and the message was truncated immediately (i sent it to newyork@apartmenttherapy.com but what came back said maxwell's address). what's up?

Lori 2,
The cigarette ad was in the newstand version of Domino too - I think for Pall Malls?
I believe they were advertising a new ultra light which typically marketed to women, so I wasn't too surprised it was in this magazine. Personally, I was not upset on finding the ad as you appear to be - free will and all means I can just as easily ignore the pitch just as I do for plenty of other bits of crap they try to sell. It did, however, feel a little retro to come across the ad.
Since it was a pullout add, if you are really offended, why not rip it out and send it to the marketing department of the magazine? Let them throw it away while letting them know you opinion of who they take money from?

nothing about domino surprises me anymore.

My boyfriend recently moved into a new apartment with plaster walls. His last place had drywall, so hanging wall art was simple. Now we are confused as to how to hang things on the wall without making a mess of the new paint job.
Does anyone have any tips/tricks on how to hang things from plaster? Nothing too heavy, typical picture frames with glass.

Posted this last week, but thought I would try again:
anyone have a recommendation for a simple white shower curtain that doesn't need a liner? I love CB2's canvas shower curtain (http://www.cb2.com/family.aspx?c=476&f=3283) but called customer service who said they strongly recommend using a liner with it, and I just hate having a curtain and a liner. I'm open to synthetic but it would be nice if it doesn't look "synthetic." Thanks!

Apointe,
We have plaster walls too and we just nail right into them. If you're afraid of the plaster disintegrating, use a longer nail. Plaster walls tend to be thick and can take a bigger nail.
We actually hung some photos last night and just used regular picture hangers.

apointe, I have plaster walls & yes, hanging things gets tricky sometimes. For things that aren't too heavy, I have used regular picture hangers (the kind with 2 nail holes, though). Just put some blue painter's tape first where you are going to drive the nails (this will help prevent cracking pieces of the plaster out). Also, for some reason, I have had better luck using a little tack hammer as opposed to a regular hammer (maybe it's just my technique, or that I have more control over the lighter hammer -- but it definitely works better for me).

Thanks a million Eliza and robyn! We will try those out this week :-)

Hey Alex in DC-
Yes, it is a Pall Mall ad. I like your suggestion of mailing the ad back to them. I will definitely give them a piece of my mind.
Yes, it is true that magazines are filled with ads for lots of crap that not all of us want (which I also try to ignore if they are not offensive), but I view cigarette ads differently. Cigarettes do nothing other than cause disease and death in a population of people. It is a public health issue, and I don't want to see such harmful ads in a design magazine.

i want to order some herbs online, and found this site...anyone use it before or have a site to suggest?
http://www.linglesherbs.com/catalog.htm
my reason for doing so is that i've called every nursery/garden center in nyc, and no one has ALL the plants that i want. since i'm carless, that means trekking it to four different places, and i'm too lazy for all that...
suggestions?

I have a question regarding the smallest apartment. Is it my impression, or did Max say that the postings would be open for voting for 3 days? Can anyone comment?

Has anyone seen this chandelier in person? Is it as stunning as it looks in this picture??

Anusha - that was also my impression, but I have no idea where I read it.

cat-
I was at Graham and Green a week ago and I saw it. I thought it looked pretty good. I do feel, however, that in general the pics of their stuff online look exceptional, but in person the items look to be of a lesser quality compared to the pics. Not sure if that helps you at all.

hmm, I am wondering out loud, bcs I see that my posting was on only for 48 hours, but the most recent ones have been up for more than 72 hours. I wonder how do these things get decided. And I know that they said the Friday posts would be up for longer since it is the weekend, but maybe they should have posted only Mon thru Wed with 3 days (72 hours) ??? just me out loud

Lori2 - Thanks, it does help. I was going to order it sight unseen, but I will definitely wait until I can see it in person :)
Anusha - I think it's a valid concern. Maybe you should email Maxwell?

Elizabeth C,
you might want to try the washable shower curtain 'liner' from Restoration Hardware. My best friend uses them alone in his very lovely modern bathrooms - and they look great. It is nylon but doesn't look or smell plastic-y like a typical liner.
Cat,
oh my god!! so lovely!!

Shout-out to p(too): I just wanted to say that your comments on the SCC entries are awesome. Thank you. (and I agree about the split between decor and innovation prizes!)

Lori 2, I also god annoyed at the huge cigarette ad. I wanted to write to domino telling them that cigarettes have nothing to do with design - in fact quite the opposite. Nothing like a nasty tobacco brown stain and horrid ash smell to ruin a room.

Elizabeth C,
I recently purchased a waffle weave shower curtain from Target on line. I didn't pay enough attention and only learned it is nylon when it arrived--my plan was to cut it up to use the fabric for another project. I wanted the 100% cotton waffle weave. The nylon would be very washable, no wrinkle etc so would work without a liner if laundered regularly.

Hey Olya, thanks so much! It's a an awesome contest this year!

Lori 2 and Rachel,
Domino is also full of botox ads--yet another dangerous product that has nothing to do with design. I'm not impressed that either are in domino, but I really don't have high expectations for the magazine anymore. However, it may help if people start complaining--you never know!

Domino has gone downhill in the year that I've subscribed. The standard barefoot-gal-in-sundress cover matches the contents in lightweight nothingness. They made such a big deal about their "green" issue and it was very disappointing. It's not much better than In Style anymore.
