I spontaneously purged my closet last night and I felt so great. I got rid of all the pants that make me feel fat and mumsy as well as shirts that don't fit perfectly etc. I also discovered clothes I had forgotten I had. I was really ruthless!!

I have a thought that has bothered me for a few days. This is my personal feeling, and I am not trying to offend anyone, just want to see if someone else feels the same on this point. For years, on Thursday mornings I have always checked the Home and Garden section of the New York Times, first thing in the morning. I read all the entries, suggestions, shopping guidance, it is really good (although I feel the quality of it has declined in the past year or so). So when they started showing up on this site, to me, it feels redundant to me and a tad like lazy work. Cutting and pasting into a blog, from a source that is easily accessable on line to EVERYBODY, doesn't show a lot of originality. Anybody out there that feels the same?

Matilda-that's inspiring! I need to get on my closet too.

Not really. I don't get the NY Times. If I did, then it would be only for the House & Garden section... so this is just easier for me.

I enjoy the AT Home & Garden Roundups. Although I do generally read that section myself on Thursday mornings and therefore don't often use the links, I imagine a number folks visit the articles for the first time because they find them here. And I like that the posts on AT provide a forum for comments and discussion.

I agree that the posts provide an opportunity for folks to weigh in.
The winners are posted on the Chicago site.

Chicago is the only city that has posted the winner. I wonder why NY hasn't posted yet.

I think it is odd that the winners aren't posted on NY site too. What is up?

Re: NYT pickups . . . I like to read the print edition first, then read everyone's comments on AT later in the day.
HELP REQUEST: Does anyone know of a good insurance-carrying floor-tile installer for a galley kitchen in Harlem? Half Silestone, (hidden) half ceramic.

I also don't read NYT during the week, so AT roundup is the only place I see the Home & Garden section.

hello,
i recently bought a glass bar cart on Craigs List, and I was wondering what to put on the bottom shelf? If you search "bar cart" on this website, a similar bar cart will appear......

Does anyone know of an attractive electric baseboard heater panel? The ones in my apartment are so ugly and I would like to replace them with something that takes up less room. I have not turned up anything with searching.

Anusha73 - I posted this exact thing a few months ago - I wrote something like "Why do you post items from the NY/Times? Don't we all read that anyway?" but as I recall no-one replied...
As its an online paper that I read wherever I am in the world I too thought it unnecessary to re-post those items - discussion about them could easily go in these open thred posts

Add me to the list of those who prefer to come here to AT to read the NYT Home and Garden Roundup.

I had a quick question regarding upholstery - after years of doing the mid-century thing, I have suddenly become obsessed with the idea of putting a bergere-style armchair in the corner of my room-blame it on Brocade Home!
I have seen many strong possibilities on eBay but most would need to be reupholstered. I know the range can be vast, but if I am willing to be flexible regarding fabrics, roughly how much should I expect to spend on this kind of job in NYC? Would $500 or less be reasonable, or is this more of a$700-800 job? FYI, the chairs I am looking at typically have a wood frame but a fabric-covered back, sides and interior, with a separate cushion on the seat only.

eeeck-
Try these guys, and don't be put off by the taxi seats! :)
They did a great job on some side chairs for me for $100 each, and are really nice in general.

Another vote for keeping the roundup. I like it. I don't always get a chance to see the paper, either online or in print, so this is like a quick breeze through.

I'm moving into my first apartment soon and thanks to AT, I've got some nice duvet covers in mind. However, it's almost summer, and I think all I really want until September is sheets and a thin quilt/coverlet/bedspread (I honestly don't really know what the difference is between the three terms). Anyone know where I can get something affordable that doesn't look like it's from an English cottage? Most of what I seen has been either 'English cottage' or plain solid colors.
view elchan's profile
elchan--urban outfitters has some great deals on cute quilts and bedspreads. and if you can hold out, their sales can be amazing.
view JR's profile
elchan -- you might also consider using a duvet cover without the duvet in it, since you've already got nice duvet covers in mind.

thanks Sparkiy! I haven't found the perfect bergere yet, but when I do will certainly give those guys a call.
view eeeck's profile
I would take the terms to mean:
quilt - two layers of fabric with a filling in between - with stitching holding the layers together
coverlet - any kind of blankety thing that you chuck over the bed - or one of those fitted things you get in hotels that is the shape of the bed and covers the whole thing, pillows included
bedspread - A bed cover, usually thin with just one layer of fabric, with sides that go to the floor - usually not fitted or shaped in any way.
