Does anyone have any ideas for how to create cinderblock-style bookshelves, but using something prettier than cinderblocks? I have a bunch of pretty white shelves that I'm not going to be able to wall-mount as planned, and I'm looking for a cheap way to make them into a bookcase. Does Ikea or Container Store carry something stylish and strong enough to place between the boards to create shelving? I remember seeing a few ideas on AT a while back, but can't seem to find them now.

Do you need a garage sale license/permit to have a stoop sale? I'm thinking about taking my stuff to the curb for a few hours. Some other tenants did it a couple weeks back.

Moxie -- Have you looked at a hardware store for glass bricks? They come in a cinderblock-type size as well as in brick size.
Another possibility -- there are a lot of ornamental cinderblocks out there, and I'd bet you can paint them if you don't like the original color.

I'm moving into a very long narrow apartment with very high ceilings that are currently outfitted with horrendous fluorescent lights. I'm not an overhead light fan anyways, but I need to find an alternative lighting scheme that doesn't take up much room and doesn't need to be professionally installed. I'm thinking sconces or some kind of lighting that can be hung on the walls (not just for the living room but bathroom also). the only ones I can find are sort of tacky, does anyone have a suggestion?

I used large terra cotta pots but I only was brave enough to stack them 3 high. You probably could go higher... if you dare.

New Pet Peeve: Seeing gorgeous photographs of living rooms in which the coffee table is so far from the sofa and chairs, that you would never be able to put your coffee cup on it... or bedside tables at such a distance from the bed, that your favorite book is *not* easily within reach.
I'm beginning to suspect that the rules for what looks great are at odds with what actually works. Shouldn't they be one and the same when it comes to furniture arrangement?

Moxie - I've seen this done with terracotta pots too, but I like Wende's glass brick suggestion much better! I once made some using these big white blocks I rescued from the display stock room of the shop I worked in - not as pretty as glass bricks, but free!

I found a HUGE mirror at IKEA that I want to buy but have absolutely no way to get it home. Has anyone used one of the "guy with a truck" guys to get things delivered from IKEA? The store charges more than the mirror to delivery so I want to find another way.

Moxie -
I would check out the flower district on 28th st between 6th & 7th aves. In particular, I am thinking of two stores that carry all kinds of vases and pottery and containers (no plants). Both are close to 7th ave, one is on the South side of the street, the other is on the North side. They are almost opposite from each other. I have seen a lot of square and rectangular shaped goodies there.
tlinell-
What about IKEA?

tlinell,
Not knowing what style of wall lighting you want or how much you want to spend, I can only point you to some websites that have decent lighting.

Anne - search this site for Man with a Van. There is one recommended in an '06 post. I tend to think that guy who passes out his card to the line in Port Authority is legit. He's in with all the redcaps there. If he were a scam, they wouldn't let him do it.
