I know there's always lots of posts about people need reupholstery work done...so I thought I'd share a great reupholsterer that I found...

Galeano's Upholstery in Sunnyside (Queens) - 718-396-9816. Alvaro is the owner. His son is email accessible in case you want to email photos for an estimate (but call first). Really so pleased with their work (and price).

I am thrilled with the job they did, you can see before & after pics of my chairs here:

http://iloveupstate.blogspot.com/2007/11/chairs-chairs-chairs.html

They also let me use my own fabric without any fuss.

Hope that helps someone!

I am looking for a basket type soap dish that lets the water run through the bottom as a gift for my uncle. His current one must be at least 20 years old and it is disintegrating. These don't seem to be in style right now because I can't find them anywhere. Any suggestions? Thank you!

I Love Upstate -

That's the kind of thing you should post onto the "Tips" thread, because these days, that's where people will look for such a thing!

katedet, i have seen that style of soap dish several times at TJ Maxx, but their items change regularly, so your mileage may vary.

Curtis - True, but I'm too exciteable and the "Tips" area wasn't up when I logged on this morning. It's up now...but I don't want to double post. It'll come up if someone searches on AT (I think...).

ElizabethR--

Fertility, or passion?

If passion, get some warm red going, and use pink-tinted bulbs.

If fertility, boxers.

I Love Upstate--
Submit it to the site so it can make it into the services/vendor archives.

Possibly I should post this under the "party density" thread, but it scares me, so I'm posting here. We're having a party for my husband's 30th birthday which is a poker party, b/c he loves poker. The problem is that we have too many people to all play poker at one table--there will probably be 17 people, give or take. A plurality will be serious poker players, some don't know how to play. The options, as I see them, are:

1. Only have one poker table, so more than half the people would not play. This is probably OK with the people who don't know how to play anyway, but it would reduce the overall poker ambiance for those who are serious about it.
2. Set up one big and one small poker table (in the adjoining kitchen area) while keeping our current furniture arrangement--still not enough room for everybody to play, unless some people bail.
3. Move the couch entirely out of the living room and set up two tables in there, resulting in (probably) enough seats for everybody to play if we buy more folding chairs.

#2 is probably a bad split-the-baby compromise. I'm torn about whether #3 would be bizarre and uncomfortable, and thinking, it's a poker party, might as well go whole hog about the poker thing.

So, which would you prefer if you were attending this party?

As a pretty consistent AT poster (recently), I would like to complain about those OBNOXIOUS video ads (the ones with Tina Fey) for some product (which I do not care to find out about). They are totally a drag on my computer and bandwidth, and cause everything to go slowly. Suffice to say, I will not be returning to AT until these OBNOXIOUS ads are taken down.

um, this is way off topic. ok. i was going to post it on Green, but there's no open thread.

i'm starting to develop a sensitivity to perfumey smells, just like my mom and sister. i always ragged them about it, but now i know. is there anything i could use, like a smelling salt type idea, to clear the smell from filling my whole head with nausea? um, does that make sense?

scenario: i hurriedly leave the makeup/perfume department at the store, but the smell is still assaulting me, so i whip out my handy-dandy __________ and give it a sniff and now the stench is begone from my a-r-e-a.

any ideas?

the SARS mask is looking mighty fine these days!

Re: the poker party..first, do the people know it's going to be a poker party? If they do, even those who haven't played before will find it easy to learn and probably will wind up playing and those who really would be turned off by the poker thing probably wouldn't come. If they don't know it's a poker party and everyone comes, I still think they would find it easy to learn and would probably play. That said, I would go for door #2..I've seen this done before and it doesn't seem unusual where space is limited. That way you would still have some seating available for those who might want to chat, but not play poker.

Kdkaboom, do you like coffee?

I'm just thinking how they often have a dish of coffee beans at perfume counters, to clear the olfactory palate before sniffing the next thing. Maybe you could carry a little bottle of coffee beans in your bag?

kdkaboom-

Are there still some perfumes/fragrances that you do like or can wear?

I am extremely sensitive to smells and they often make me nauseous as well. However there are smells that I also enjoy. I wear one perfume and if I smell that it makes me happy and relieves me of any bad smell in the vicinity if I spray it on me or in the room. So for example I keep a bottle in my office and if someone nearby has food that gives me a headache (fish, fried foods, etc.) I spray it and it does help a lot. If perfume or coffee beans don't work for you, what about a sachet of cloves?

hejiranyc,

I had exactly the same problem, until someone told me in one of these Open threads told me about the Firefox ad-on "adblock plus". I love it so much. And really, I would have had to stop reading AT with all the flashing images. Regular, quiet, ads are okay. But flashing ads are not to be tolerated.

set up 2 seating areas. your couch side chairs coffee table can be one of them - its fine to play poker if you're not sitting at a table proper, i think.

anyway, as a poker lover i'd prefer 2 areas where some people can't play right away (friends have things to chat about, poker or not) as opposed to one 17 person table (which isn't conducive to fun poker playing).

Welcome back, Elizabeth in AL--I'm sorry to hear you've been having bad luck. I hope things start to look up for you.

(By the way, where in AL are you? I lived in Montgomery for a year, and before I went I would never have thought I'd miss it, but I do sometimes.)

hardware matchy matchy or no? hello at:ny, we are continuing a renovation of a 1920's home. we have polished chrome in our kitchen, painted hinges, and a horrendous mismatch of doorknobs that we inherited. we are wanting to replace all of the doorknobs and hinges with rubbed oil bronze ones from rejuvenation. will that work with the polished chrome of the kitchen and the satin finish chrome of our bathrooms which will not be replaced? i'm quite perplexed about this and welcome all advice. how do folks feel in general about mixing up their hardware finishes? happy 2008, everyone!
