ODDA Storage Unit and Coat Rack from IKEA

6-18-odda-tree-1.jpg

This is one of the oddest pieces of furniture we've seen lately — it's the ODDA storage unit that combines a hat and coat rack, laundry bin and shoe storage into a single design. ATLA has looked at the ODDA guest bed (also kind of weird). We snapped a picture of the tree-like coat rack on our recent tour of IKEA Brooklyn, but we didn't realize it was attached to an entire storage structure...

The ODDA storage unit with clothes tree is $199 from IKEA. With the literal interpretation of a coat tree, storage and open-topped laundry bin...what would you use the ODDA storage unit for?

My family and I were really stumped by this piece on our recent visit to IKEA. So the hole is for a laundry bin, you say? I didn't know what to make of it.

Living in a cooler climate, I'd probably throw mittens/hats/scarves in the hole.

Overall, though, I don't really care for it.

One could say it's a bit...odd-a?

I'm sorry.

It's all a bit much, color scheme included. My first instinct was "Hey, that looks like an outhouse seat!" In other words - if you buy this, make it very clear to your toddlers what that hole is and is NOT for.

If used as a landing strip, the hole could be for paper recycling. Or, get a bucket/pail to stay in it and use it as a planter or umbrella stand.

I'm a bit surprised that the response to this piece thus far has been negative! Surprised enough that I actually created an account and am now able to comment on everything :)

My first thought was literally, "I love it", and then I opened this page only to love it more. This is exactly what I have been looking for to fit in my landing strip. The red, black, and white match my decor which is mostly black/white with red accents. I particularly like this unit because I've been dreaming of something that my boyfriend can throw his work clothes into just as he enters my apartment (considering he works with fiber glass, I want it isolated). At the moment his clothes are in a laundry basket by the door, i.e. a style eye sore that needs to be moved when someone stops by.

In addition, I decorated that landing strip area with Blik's "Ambition killed the cat-black on white wall" http://www.whatisblik.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=B&Product_Code=TH-112 , but I still feel it's just not balanced appropriately. This unit may just fit with it's tree/outdoor appearance.

I'm seriously excited here. If I end up purchasing it I will be sure to submit some pictures!

Although I think its kinda a strange combination...I'm with nerli I kinda like it. My other half manages a bar, so his clothes always smell like smoke. He takes them off as soon as he comes home and throws them on a chair...this might be the answer to this problem...now if it were only black, white, and yellow...

I love it and am currently staring at the front door wondering if I could fit it in the landing strip space. Hmmm.

nerli315, I don't know who you are or where you've come from, but thank you for stopping by and posting that wall graphic. I'm smitten. I've been looking for one that was light and whimsical, but not pretentiously so. This one is perfect. Now the question is high or low contrast. Black or white on my deep gray walls. Hmmmmm......

I've been looking for EXACTLY a hamper to put downstairs in the entryway to catch all the clothes my kids seem to throw off the minute they enter the house. I was almost going to buy a "hidden" hamper (looks like a cabinet or buffet) on homedecorators.com because I was tired of all their clothes littering the couches and living area. Our toddlers are the usual culprits and it seemed pointless to take them upstairs to change and leave the dirty clothes in the hamper and then later take it down to the basement to wash. It really saves on making trips up and down (although good exercise) and hopefully, cut down on the mountain of clothes.

This contraption would be perfect for cold climates: coats/gloves/hats go on the rack (where they'd dry better than in a closet), boots go on top of the shoe rack (with an old towel underneath to catch drips), surplus gloves/hats/scarves go in the storage drawers, and dirty stuff goes in the laundry basket. I would've loved to have something like this when I lived in Alaska, where outdoor gear invariably ends up in a damp muddy pile by the front door.

As a laundry contraption, the tree is for hanging clothes on hangers and the other part is a hamper.

This is what it would look like if you bought it somewhere besides IKEA:

This would be great in a teen's room to keep things tidy. "Hang up your bath towel, robe, pj's, school clothes, etc. Throw your dirty stuff in the hamper. Put your smelly shoes in the other part." I can hear myself now!

Quiltmaster, I'm wondering if you decided on the high contrast or low contrast. I am glad that you found some inspiration in my post! I really do love blik and think their ideas are great. I have actually been trying to find a roll of the vinyl they use so that I could design my own decals. I can't imagine that it is very difficult and since I'm quite crafty/artsy, I would love to bring some of my ideas to life.
