Insta-room. We don't have any experience with The Living Space Company (yet), but they offer a possibly brilliant solution: LEASED pressurized room divider walls that can be installed in 1-3 hours and won't damage your walls.
The Living Space Company has been around for 16 years and their business is totally simple: they put walls up and take them down.
The average cost for a 3 year lease (12x8 wall) is $795 with a $200 deposit. You can choose from an assortment of doors and translucent panels to allow light through. I am a big fan of Living Space. Before I bought my current apartment I was holed up with two atrocious roommates and the wall was a godsend. Because it is a lease, however, we ran into problems when I moved out (does the new tenant pay me for the money I spent on the wall???). I would suggest a contract between roommates be written up prior to use. The sound was well blocked and the door was solid...not too flimsy. The people who came to install the wall were wonderfully nice and helpful. The service was quick and worth it!
I hadn't heard of this before, but it sounds like a good solution for dividing up an apartment.
I doubt I'd go back to the roomate thing again, but if I did and needed to divide a room, I'd look into this. The translucent panels are a great idea.

i don't get the leasing idea. why not just sell them? they're not that expensive.
i built two walls and a door to make a small 10x8 ft bedroom in one corner of my loft in a weekend for $300 in materials. Using a prehung door ($50 from home depot) makes it a lot easier.
sounds like a good business idea though - for nyc anyway. i bet some enterprising architecture students could start a similar business and charge half as much.
