We used cheap rope lighting from home depot for under the deck, it gives a great floating feeling & makes it safer at night.
A friend Jeff Shepherd did the building for us. For the roof & table we used beautiful old beams we found in dumpsters around the local Bushwick area. They are tearing down old factories, it's really sad to see this beautiful wood go to waste.
Thanks Shawn!
Great space. I am buying the roof rights to my apartment so need some great ideas. I looked up fire regulations though and know that gas or charcoal grills are not allowed on any roof in nyc. Gas is allowed on ground floor outdoor space with limits on the size of propane tanks. Be careful

You should look at the roof of 170 Tillary Street in Brooklyn. I used to live in that building, and we built a deck up there, and the then building manager set up little garden areas throughout with various themes. We had a cactus garden, a lush garden complete with goldfish pond (he retrofitted an abandoned bathtub with a pump motor and built a stone surround to make it more pond-like. It was really nice to walk up the one flight from our apt and sit up there with a couple of beers for an impromptu gathering.

This is poetry for brooklyn, an evening like this one. It really reminds you of the magic and that cool people that make up the city. Thanks Shawn!

Cecicela, Propane is not allowed on any nyc rooftops. Thats the link I got that information from. You can use charcoal on some terraces and balconies, but absolutely none on the roof. If I am wrong, I apologize, but I read through the fire safety link of yours and it seemed pretty clear

anash - you're right. propane is off limits, but barbecuing on the rooftop (charcoal, assuming building allows it) is not totally banned as suggested.

Anash - you should ask the building management for the type of construction. I live in a fire proof (FP) building and the building has permission to grill on the rooftop. If that is something of interest to you, double check with the building managing agent, especially if you are committing to buying.
