My Great Outdoors: Plumstitches' Vermont Flagstones

2009greatoutdoorsbadge.gifName: Plumstitches
Location: Jersey City, New Jersey
Type of space: Garden & Patio
Tell us about your outdoor project and how you enjoy it: We call it our 'urban garden.' It's the perfect amount of space for use to experiment with growing trees/shrubs, perennials/annuals, herbs and this year a few vegetables in planters. In the summer it's additional living space — we eat meals, play, drink and entertain in the garden. We've somewhat mastered the plants on the shady side of the garden and now we're on to the more challenging sunnier side. It gets very hot over the course of the summer — some plants have survived, others haven't. Also, we're working on getting groundcover to grow between the flagstones...

How did you create it? The raised beds were already in place when we moved in, but we have spent the past few years editing the plants. We put in the flagstone patio. Initially we thought we would do it ourselves and impulsively bought a pallet of stone on a trip to Vermont. We spent a year slowly bringing the stone back to Jersey City. In the end, we used a contractor to actually put the patio in and had to buy a bit of extra stone to create it.

We decided not to 'cement' the flagstone in place, in hopes of growing creeping Thyme and other types of ground cover between the stones. It's been a bit of a challenge, but this summer we're determined to find the right plants both for between the stones in the patio and the raised beds.

Recommended store, site, product or resource? Adirondak Chairs - from Smith & Hawken
Wrought Iron: some are hand-me-downs from family members and some has been purchased from Target
Kids Chairs: from Ikea
Plants: Home Depot, White Flower Farm, The Farm at Green Village, Lowe's and other places where we see interesting plants.
