Private outdoor space in New York City is a rare luxury. Even when it's on a gravel rooftop like the one Hedge & Fennel use on the opening page of their website, pictured above. The New York-based designers have two deck spaces in their portfolio that put rooftops to use with ipe wood, steel, and their custom-designed furniture...
This one is a SoHo rooftop, all decked out with an outdoor kitchen and killer views.
This is a small deck addition on a residence in Boerum Hill. We're loving the steel-and-wood railings on this one, and the surrounding green treetops.
For more of Hedge & Fennel's work, which includes custom furniture for both indoors and out, see their website.
Astroturf? Seriously?
That stuff will be a lot of fun the day after a rain, considering we do get a good amount of it here in New York.
Why not build a real garden rooftop. Read in the recent National Geographic. Having a garden rooftop not only looks nicer, but it apparently reduces the cooling costs of a building up to 25%.
Not to mention that instead of all the water running off into the streets flooding corners sewers and the subway, it will be of use to the plants up top.
