Your Outdoor Space Away from Home

0617_promenade.jpg

Let's face it; we don't all have outdoor spaces at home. Most all of us do, however, have a nearby outdoor space close to home that we use as our own. Our outdoor space just near home is the Brooklyn Promenade.

When we want to sit outside for breakfast, chat with a friend in the breeze, or read a book in the shade, we head to the Promenade. It's often very crowded, but since it's our outdoor space near home, we use it early in the morning and late at night - both off-peak hours for visitors. What is your outdoor home away from home, your little space in the city that you feel is a little bit your own?

Ft. Greene Park for lying in the grass, the stoop for just hanging out or reading the paper.

Boston Common is literally steps from my office... so I spent a lot of time there and in the Public Gardens.

Dolores Park is the best backyard anyone could ever ask for. The view from the top of the hill still makes me happy to live in San Francisco, every time.

I am lucky and very grateful to have several parks nearby.

I'm within walking distance of the Columbus Circle entrance to Central Park.

The playground park, Hell's Kitchen Park, is at the corner of my block:

BUT MY FAVORITE PARK is a neighborhood community park. One that was originally appropriated from abandoned lots, and is now leased from the city by the Hell's Kitchen Neighborhood Association, called Clinton Community Garden, on 48th Street, between 9th and 10th Avenues:

They also have many photos here:

I'm surprised, having done a search, it doesn't look like AT has ever done a feature on Clinton Community Garden (hint, hint).

Although I live in Manhattan with a private roof deck, the promenade (first photo) in Brooklyn Heights is by far one of the most charming and incredible places to go in NYC. My opinion of course. People talk up the West Village and their West Side park. Been there done that..Your looking at Jersey, nothing too compelling about that. Central park is a tourist nightmare. Madison Park is pretty nice these days(broadway/5th and 26th)

I am one of the few with outdoor space at home. And although I do cherish our patio and deck, I love to go to Prospect Park early in the morning when dogs can be off their leashes. I don't have a dog (the 3 cats, husband and co-op board would take issue) so I get my fix at the park.

i live on the roof of my building and the door in my kitchen provides outdoor access at all times, but i walk my dog in riverside park. this wonderful park is an escape from the city. walking along the hudson with no barriers, just rocks and the water, or walking through areas that resemble a forest preserve.
btw, Central Park has the most choices of areas to visit and not all of them are full of tourists.

I'm no where near NY..but in Toronto my park is Allen Gardens. It's run year long by volunteers and there are 5 green houses in the middle also run by volunteers. They're gorgeous:

Ever since I moved in to Flatbush Gardens, my girlfriend and I have been going to Prospect Park for the free outdoor concerts. We’re also avid runners so we tend to spend a lot of time running around the Brooklyn Promenade and on the Brooklyn Bridge.

I LOVE living in Brooklyn. We have a great 2 bedroom apartment with incredibly affordable rent and convenient subway access, so it’s easy to catch the train into Manhattan to shop or go see a movie.
