ColorTherapy: A Riviera Bathroom Mural

I suggested last week that bathrooms tend to be small ugly spaces that we spend a lot of time in, and require something special to get them up on their feet. Allow me to toot my own horn...

For my own small ugly bathroom (5'x7', natch, with walnut-colored tile) I decided to create the French Riviera. I wanted sunshine, sea and sky, with certain classical motifs in the landscaping. At 35 square feet, this required careful planning.

There are several areas that could be painted and each little tableau had to work as part of the grand scheme. On the largest single picture plane, I painted a row of cypresses leading down grass steps to the sea. A pair of sphinxes defines my "property," for as I exit the tub I imagine I’m stepping out of my outdoor shower in St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat.

This view leads you to look out onto parterre de broderie and the gardens surrounding the villa.

From the door to the bathroom one is greeted with a view of the harbor of Villefrance-sur-Mer, its hotels and restaurants located in the background.

I’ve developed a signature motif - I put a pair of titmice in every mural I paint.

This time I went all out and added peacocks too. My bathroom is so small I could barely fit inside with a light and camera, but I’ve given myself the illusion of limitless luxury and space. Call for an estimate today.

Very talented artist ... I especially love the peacock! This should be the go-to answer for anyone who asks what to do with that color tile.

Love it!

(Will probably knock it off in miniature, too!)

I would giggle every time I stepped into the bathroom. It is charming, and silly, and wonderful.

But, Mark, do you ever get tired of a particular landscape? It's easy for me to change my mind about a flat wall color and paint over it, but I imagine that it'd be far more work for you to change a mural.

If you are going to do a theme or something "clever" in your place, the bathroom is the place to do it. I love when people do something like this with their bathroom.

the peacock is beautiful and would have gone well with a blue/green theme, the rest is just tacky. Often less is more.

I kind of love most of it, but I REALLY love the peacock, because a peacock is a very tricky thing to get right, and I think he did a great job.
