apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

CoolWall by Tex-Cote

02-05-cool.jpgUsed by the government on Stealth bombers. Could also be used by homeowners on the exterior of their houses. Tex-Cote's CoolWall coating systems, when covering the exterior of a building, can actually cool the surface by tens of degrees.

The coating is an enamel that has reflective pigments in it, cooling the surface of a building and hence letting you use less cooling energy during hot months. We're impressed by this kind of performance and the price is reasonable at $30-35 per gallon.

And with global warming threatening to boil our blood here in Southern California, what could be more perfect?

What happens in the winter?

Southern California?

What about Arizona, Texas and the Southeast?

Most modern houses in TX are brick. However, I still see this as being a great thing for any house with any siding/clapboard/stucco/etc. with an Eastern exposure. I do see this as being a great thing for apartments (not made of brick). Unfortunately, most apartment owners aren't in the habit of spending extra on coating/sealants to assist their leasees.

I don't see this helping our friends in the Northeast and the Midwest too much. I don't even know how much it would help the Rocky Mountain folks who have hot summers and brutal winters.

They sell this stuff (or something similiar) in Arizona. You can put it over mason block, which is what my house is made of. Most times they put it over stucco. It's more expensive then conventional paint, but if it does what it says it does, it really would be worth it. Fun fact: my house has NO insulation in the walls. I guess they didn't think it was necessary in 1953.

Hey, I have look at this CoolWall stuff but it seems to be not as good as it says, but I did find this stuff call Hyperseal Glass. They are located in Palm Springs California, they have tested their products for years in the desert. After I had called them, they products seems to last a very long time and it is cheaper. They stuff is $25 gallon and it covers twice as much as CoolWall and TexCote's ther products. If anyone is interested in them, call them up 760-343-0626 and ask for James or the manager Brian.
