Pantone Paints

9-14-pantone1.jpgOur mind may explode with the choices, but bring it on. Last week Pantone did the impossible and introduced a line of paints based on its color system, firmly moving them into place to corner yet another color market. Graphic artists who live with Pantone decks will go nuts with over 3,000 choices.

Pantone Paints is a joint venture is The Fine Paints of Europe, which means that for this kind of excitement it will run you plenty (@ $130 per gallon):

These real Dutch paints are richly laden with the finest pigments, oils and resins, and are tinted with a unique proprietary system employing two separate dispensing systems, one for water- based acrylic paints and one for traditional, oil-based paints.

Paints come in both oil and latex based interior & exterior mixes as well as heavier house paints and can be ordered through their website or by calling 866.692.6567. (Via NYTimes House & Home)

They will also offer affordable sample pots if you have any small projects. You could repaint some cheap vases, lamp bases, a side table or some picture frames. Use your imagination.

I love pantone, but you'd think they were making the paint out of baby seal blood or something. $130 :( :(

I want the wallet (and life) of anyone whose life is going to be made easier by this $130/gallon paint.

I like the idea though I worry for them - given their percieved reputation, people will expect absolute perfection from a product that is more art than science. Combine that with ever-changing interior lighting and you are bound to find some irate customers who laid out lots of cash.

Many graphic designers will look at this and think 'great, so I can have the same problems at home as I have at the press?"

This paint IS great for making your front door look extra-special. Of course, you have to prep the hell out of it first.

It's probably meant for corporate customers. Now you can do your logo in the right shade of Pantone...
