My Design's Dreamy!: Colleen's Gilded Cage

Design: The Gilded Cage
Price: 1 ugly metal pet crate given to me by my Brother-in-Law $0 (a new one of this size costs about $99); 1 Pet Dreams Pet crate cover, XL $49 in Khaki (If I had not found this item on-line I would have sewn my own for about $10, but I liked it and it saved me time); 1 unfinished table top (hollow core) from ikea and 4 unfinished legs (it was the set up where you buy the pieces a la carte) i think the whole thing was about $50. Then I stained and sealed the wood and painted the metal leg caps to match my existing dining chairs.

Name: Colleen
Location: New York City/Yorkville
Pet's Name: Cleo
Size & Kind: She is an 8 year old 55lb female Boxer

Pitch:

"The first picture is a long shot of the table with the crate hidden underneath, the second is Cleo relaxing while my daughter eats at the table above..." [more below]

When I came up with this hidden in plain site cage idea 5 years ago, we were moving from a 400 sqft apt where Cleo's only space was her crate, we had had it, and her, since she was 12 weeks old so it was a part of her, but I HATED the way it looked and I had to find a way to hide it.

So, I thought this up.

This is my dining table and we use it every day and Cleo sleeps in her crate every night and lounges there throughout the day. it is a really good solution, people have come over several times before they realized that we even had a dog crate. We'll be moving soon and it seems cleo, now an old lady, no longer needs the security of her crate, so it looks like this will be the end of the crate and design.

Awww, what a sweet old lady. Nice use of the space under the table in a tight place, even though you lose the ability to slide your legs in close.

Great idea for the dog crate problem. Cleo might appreciate having the crate in the new place even tho' it's not a necessity. She might find it comforting in adjusting to the move and as she continues to age.

Colleen, may I ask where you got the upholstered chair in the 1st picture?

Dorie-

I could be wrong but that chair looks like something from Hold Everything.

What a great solution! I also love your blue walls. What color paint is that? Thanks!

Norma, you make an excellent point, I will use it in the transition (she also has a nice comfy bed to the left of our sofa (also hidden from plain site, which I think will become her all the time bed).

Dorie, that is a Mitchell Gold chair called
Liana http://www.mgandbw.com/liana_CHR.asp anyone who sells MG will be able to order it for you; I have a pair and they were very inexpensive, I think $400 each. MG has a few slipper chairs like this; as you may know, Crate and Barrel, West Elm, etc. get a lot (I'd say almost all) of their soft goods from Mitchell Gold, I bet one of them is selling this chair now.

I love the whole look of that area.

I just kind of want to put those pictures above the pass-through up a little so they'll be centered top to bottom in that little space, but seriously that is ALL.

Meanwhile, it looks like a VERY cozy and discreet place for the pooch.

Ksquared: As I am cleaning out my place for our move, I just happened upon a can of that very blue. It is a Benjamin Moore color # 2061-70 in Pastel Base 319 1B if that helps, off the top of my head I don't recall the name. It is 5 years old, so they might have a new light blue, but I bet Janovic could still mix it up for you.

By the way, I think my "Extra" thing was a mistake, the link is to a Flash site, so i should have specified, I would get Cleo the Mutt Dog Dwelling from http://www.momodern.com/product.asp?cat=FUR&id=10 But some other people suggested that they would buy a townhouse with a yard, and I'd like to change my fantasy purchase to that, in Brooklyn Heights or the West Village, one can dream, right?

Colleen, I love it all. The pet hideaway, and your home. If you don't mind, I've been looking for shelves like those four corner pieces, where are they from? Would they hold say, a few stacked books? Thanks!

Curtis: You sound like my husband, I hope he never sees that, he'll say "I told you so". Anyway, this is a rental, if I owned this place I would have gotten rid of that pass through the day I closed, but, alas, I had no choice but to hide it. Thanks, though, I know you're right, putting them up was a pain & I'm just lazy.

Laura: Thank you so much for the compliments (thank you all, you're all so lovely). Let me tell you about those shelves. I actually have a matched set on the other side of the sofa (I opted for a lot of symmetry in this room -- two of the same chair, four of the same bookcases too) they are very simple, i purchased these suspension cables from the Container Store http://www.containerstore.com/browse/Product.jhtml?CATID=13395&PRODID=60615 and then I went to Home Depot, bought a sheet of 3/4" plywood and had it cut down into squares the size I wanted them. (they charge for each cut, so plan carefully). We brought them home, I sanded them, stained them (Minwax Tudor) and varnished them (satin) then my husband and I put them up with toggle bolts, they are really easy to install, and they look pretty cool. I would say, if you used toggle bolts or screwed into a wood stud (we have steel studs, I don't know how to work with that!) they could hold a lot. I really needed a place for simple display of some of collected things and a place for my phone, so I never really put them to the test, but I think you could certainly put a stack of books on them no problem.

I kept looking at the photo wondering "where's the crate?" what a great idea ! Something to keep in mind.

Cleo has a wonderful face!

Thanks Colleen, I love that they were a DIY project. I will definitely be finding a way to use those suspension cables, since most floating shelves (I've found) come right out of the wall. Thanks for the tips!

Colleen, what a beautiful space! That paint color is soooo soothing - mind sharing the maker and color name/number? Thanks!

CEE: the color is a Benjamin Moore color # 2061-70 in Pastel Base 319 1B, I don't know the name, but I actually think it might have been called "light blue" I know that sounds strange, but I think that might have been it. Such a boring name, but it really is a pretty, soothing blue. Thanks for the compliments, my husband said I should put up some more photos of our apartment on Flickr if anyone wanted to see them. the link is in my name.
