apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

My Design's Dreamy!: Katherine & Mitchell's Litter Trunk

Design: The Litter Trunk
Price: about $95 for the box plus paint

Name: Katherine & Mitchell
Location: Manhattan, Gramercy
Pet's Name: Tootsie, but she is better known simply as Kitty
Size & Type: small kitty

Pitch:

"The layout and lack of closet space in our apartment made hiding the litterbox impossible. We searched everywhere and finally found Wood Works by Dave on ebay. He builds nice, solid wood trunks with an entrance cut wherever you want. The trunk comes unfinished so our creative contribution was to simply paint the thing..." [more below]

I think it turned out well, and I especially like how the inside is the gold base color, perfect for the kitty queen. With the entrance cut to face the fireplace, no one ever suspects what's in there. And because the trunk is larger than the litterbox, most of the littler stays inside. I dont know what wed do without this.

Im also attaching a picture of a wonderful placemat we picked up in Paris. Its by Donald Davies and is treated with a sort of laminated coating so that you can easily wipe or rinse it off. Its perfect for pets, and Id guess kids too.

Finally (sorry! Im relying on your editorial discretion!) Im attaching a few pics of Kitty utilizing one of her favorite designs in the house. These lucite chairs provide hours of enjoyment. Once she gets going, shell dig away for ages. Maybe its her own reflection that keeps her interestedwho knows.

7. Extra: If I had all the money in the world I would love to have a townhouse with all the rooms opening onto a courtyard in the middle with lots of trees, plants, and critters for Kitty (and us) to enjoy.

Question: while the trunk idea does disguise the litter box, don't odors get trapped and therefore intensified? Particularly as your trunk is in a corner? Although it certainly isn't pleasant to have my cats' odors wafting around my condo, at least they disappate (sp?) quickly...please correct me if I am wrong, because this is a neat hiding trick.

The cat box is in the living room? What about when you scoop oout the poop?

RC, maybe it's tossed into the fire....Mmmmmmm, that's good cat poo!

I second the request for kitty scratching lucite.

Wow, this is so wierd. We have a black and white cat that looks just like (Tootsie) Kitty. What's even wierder is that our cat's name is Bosco, but we also just call him Kitty. Love the trunk idea!

LOVE this! Definitely going to get one when I move, whenever that may be!

Do you have to move all the photos and knicknacks every time you change the litter?

We, too have a litter trunk for our 2 kitkats. My husband made ours, and I painted it white and appliqued it with a blick design transfer. It's also on casters, more for my amusement than for actual mobility purposes. We also made a little partition inside of the trunk so the litter does not get tracked into the room, and the bonus with is, since it is made of masonite, it collects excess fur as the mogs track in and out of it. Anyway, I can attest to it's effectiveness, and if it is cleaned every day, there is never a smell.

RC-
I, too, have a litter box in the living room.

I keep a "Litterlocker" next to it. I can scoop the poop & clumps into the Litterlocker right there. It works like a diaper genie and seals in the odor until you empty it. No trecking to the bathroom with a scoop, and no smell. Yay! Of course, the litterlocker ain't purty, so when I get time, I plan to make a box like the one in this entry, with enough room in it to hide the Litterlocker with the litterbox.

Hi all, thanks for letting us share. The trunk is in the living room, as there aren't many other options. We clean it frequently, ideally every day, and the smell has never been a problem. We just empty the litter into a grocery bag inside the trunk then toss out, no big deal. I often sweep and mop around the trunk and we sometimes spray the inside with antibacterial spray. Not sure this is necessary, but I think it helps fend off the smells.
