My Design's Dreamy!: Linda's Cat Tower

Design: The Cat Tower
Price: $20 (recycled baker's rack, without pans)

Name: Linda
Location: Duane Street, NYC
Pet's Name: Carrie
Size & Type: Cat, 8 lb.

Pitch:

"A second hand baker's rack became a tower for Carrie, by inserting a few shelves at different angles, covered with different fabrics or pieces of old rugs. The Cat Tower is both activity center and an organizer. Things Carrie gets attached to--feathers, string, toys, scratching post, etc.--get attached to the tower...." [more below]

She can rappel up the mesh side panel. The decor changes from time to time: sometimes she has curtains around the upper portion for instance.

The tower allows her to sit at eye level with people; if people are on the sofa, she is on the second or third shelf, usually playing with the catnip glove; if we are sitting at dinner she is on the third shelf; if there are a lot of guests and people are standing, she sits on the top (plexiglass) shelf, being a hostess.

I love it! Perfect for the many moods of cat. How do you attach the shelves so they are stable?

Very fun and original. I love it that you can personalize so many elements to your cat's preferred materials/toys.

That's a hoot.

Now that you mention it, P(too), didn't Rube Goldberg usually put a cat somewhere in his contraptions? I hope Carrie's tail isn't tied to some lever somewhere. :)

It's like you read your cat's mind! If cats could draw, they would be designing stuff like this.

I showed this to the husband and could just see the gleam in his eye as he envisioned uses for old computer server racks...

Adorable! My only question is stability - does it ever move around or tip over when she jumps/climbs on it?

Excellent! This one has to win.

THIS ONE DEFINITELY HAS TO WIN....WHAT A GREAT PIECE OF CAT ARCHITECTURE!!!!!!!! ALL THE CATS ON THAT BLOCK MUST DEFINITELY BE JEALOUS.

Forget cats I want this for myself. Just what I need to get more exercise. Think Carrie would mind if I rappelled her?

This should definitely win. Very creative and fun. Carrie is one lucky cat (I'm sure she deserves it!)

This is the most creative and innovative idea I've seen in a long time. It puts cat scratching posts and the usual cat toys to shame. Clearly, this designer not only loves her cat, but understands her needs and personality.

um, great for the cat, but how does it fit in with the apartment?

As a certified horticultural therapist I can appreciate the designers understanding and observation of the daily needs of her cat and admire all of the oppurtunity given to her pet to interact, or not with humans. This is designing for the future.

Carrie's kitty tower brings the excitement of the outdoors inside. She will never get bored with the everchanging options you've provided her. EP

Carrie gets great care and love. For such a playful cat, that's a BIG reward. CM

Oooh, my favorite part is that Carrie gets to be at eye level. My cats would LOVE that! And how things are interchangeable, so it never gets boring. You've really got me thinking with this one ... I wonder how can I rig something similar at my house? :)

Fantastic! We're in the restaurant business and this gives new meaning to the use of commercial shelves!

well done, what a creative way to use found objects! and aren't cats great at that? the most expensive toy is nothing next to that fresh, crisp, noisy brown paper bag.
