Hi guys, I just wanted to share my dog's new bed I made last weekend — we have a disused fireplace in our living room and I thought it would be charming to make it into a doggy bed for our Shiba Inu, Raul.
Hi guys, I just wanted to share my dog's new bed I made last weekend — we have a disused fireplace in our living room and I thought it would be charming to make it into a doggy bed for our Shiba Inu, Raul.
I took the measurements of the base, and got some foam cut to fit it. As I don't have a sewing machine, I used velcro adhesive strips and hand stitching for the pillow case. I hope you like it! Thanks, Paley Girl
Thanks for sharing! That is perhaps the most stunning fireplace I've ever seen — and a great way to repurpose a fireplace.
You have a beautiful fireplace and a beautiful dog, but I'm not liking the idea of combining them.
I'd rather see the fireplace as the focal point of the room (see recent post on this subject) than as a dog bed. Sorry.

I find delightful the things pet owners think are a good design idea. Love of the pet will always triumph over effective or thoughtful design.
If your pooch is happy and so are you then congrats on being a good dog parent.
For a pure design point of view even accepting that using an art deco fireplace surround as an ideal dog bed spot, the bed does has neither the lines nor shape to compliment the wonderful fireplace.

Way to go with a clever idea and creative execution. Raul is absolutely adorable and looks like a king on his throne!
Hard to say if this is ruining a focal point without seeing the room in full or understanding the usage of the room. The fireplace is really beautiful, though. It would look great with a dramatic mirror extending to the ceiling.

What kind of dog do you have? Looks kind of like mine - excet we've never been able to figure out his mix.

Beautiful fireplace and beautiful dog, but I'm not sure this is the best combination of the two. The two green bottles also look out of place and are sort of college dorm-y.
Instead, I'd hang art (something graphic and bold, maybe an oversized black and white photograph) or a big mirror over the fireplace, add a potted orchid, and place big white candles instead of the dog bed inside.

Fireplace, doggy bed, who cares - I'll take any excuse to see pictures of that puppy!

Aw, looks like my Shiba, Aurora, when she was a puppy.
I had placed our Shiba Inu's bed up against a non working fireplace in our last apartment, she never uses her beds though, she prefers the couch and being in our bed with us, which is also what we prefer.
PS: Ever since we got our Shiba Inu 3 years ago, and never seeing one in person before we got ours, I now see them EVERYWHERE!

Funny! I remember coming home from school when I was little to find my mom painting the inside of our fireplace white. She put our Chihuahua's bed in there, and it was his little hang out spot. He was the center of our house and home, so it was quite appropriate come to think of it.

Forgot to mention that I think your Shiba Inu is beyond cute!

I think it's cute what you've done w/your lovely fireplace...and I'm pretty sure your Shiba Inu loves it. Pay no attention to the naysayers. They're fun dogs...a family member lived w/us and her Shiba Inu for about a year.

I love the fireplace - it's like something out of a Tim Burton film.

Thanks for all the nice comments about our fireplace and our dog. Both my husband and my doggy love it. We just moved into our new flat and haven't had much money to decorate it, and we definitely didn't want to do the cliche candles thing. We thought the doggy mattress was cheap enough and cute. Thanks for the suggestions anyway!
