Foo Dogs at West Elm

7-26-foo-dog-1.jpg

Trend Watch! The trend we witnessed develop in the past eight months has trickled down to the mass market by way of West Elm. The new catalog features a Foo Dog Pillow and a modern version of a "Groovy Foo Dog"...

The silk satin pillow cover is priced at $29. The "Groovy Foo Dog" accent looks like it comes in Beet and Black resin. It is a "store only" item and the price was not given in the catalog or online.

It looks like the lion/dog/dragon creature statues and figurines all over Okinawa. They were always in pairs and I think they were called "shisha" dogs or something like that.

Trend or no trend - these things remind me of the scary neclace that the Brady boys found in Hawaii that made Greg fall off his surfboard.

I'll let P(2) respond to krister.

What scares me is that I've now seen foo dogs come into fashion three times....

That's a classical chinese motive of a LION. not a dog. Some people put a pair flanking their front doors but usually only the rich and influential does that. Supposedly it's traditionally believed to be a dangerous item to put at the main doors because lions are very 'strong/powerful' creatures, unless the master of the house is powerful enough, or else the lions will bring ill fate to the master of the house.

Anyway, I think you can sometimes see these big lion statues flanking front doors of banks and big business in places like Hong Kong. ( but the last time i have been to Hong Kong was more than a decade ago, my memory might have failed me)

they're guardian spirits. it would be a bit much to put them in front of a "humble" abode, but such figurines might be part of the home altar in the same humble abode.
