Fuel Cell Tealights

0611_fuel.jpg

We first spotted these in restaurants and really loved their appearance. Their glass-and-metallic look was kind of clinical and their visible wick in fuel was old world to us. A little researched told us these are called fuel cells...

Now, in looking further into fuel cells, we learned they're not just about looks:

  • They burn cleaner than regular old candles.

  • They are less of a fire hazard than wax candles: should they tip over, they stop burning.

  • Each tealight-sized cell burns for eight hours.

  • They fit into standard votives like a tealight would.

The only drawback that's really jumped out at us is that fuel cells are generally sold in extremely large quantities, as they're marketed more toward the restaurant industry than to individuals. One such seller is here, but there are many others out there, too.

And for those large grosses of fuel cells you'll be buying, I see they also sell 55 gallon drums of replacement fuel!
