Dear AT,
Where can I find a well designed room screen to separate my studio for under $500??? Something more than a shoji screen and the like, something similar in design to this beautiful screen at Velocity Art and Design
Please help me!!! I know something is out there!!!!!!!! Stephen
We, unfortunately, are no help whatsoever. Anyone else?? (Thanks, Stephen!) MGR

The budget end options include this item or this item from Amazon.com.
In fact, searching on "Shoji screen" at Amazon gives you 54 items to choose from, all between $50 and $290 dollars.
You can get a whole custom sliding Shoji Door from Orientalfurniture.com for $500
Ah, we love the internet :)
So I was flipping through the current Budget Living and I saw a solution to the readers problem, maybe. Its on page 120. Basically what they did was cut out shapes on paper and take them to a metal fabricator and make a screen of sorts and connected it with s hooks and wire. You get the same look. You can have the metal painted by a body shop, whatever color you wanted. even the fabricator can probably do that. And it should be significantly less than 500 including hardware.
I honestly doubt if a wooden screen is going to be found for under 500 unless you do it yourself, but I would check under eames and screen on ebay, and even local auction houses, particularly out in Connecticut. West Elm might have something but I don't remember anything in the current catalog.
The only thing I could think of from west elm is to purchase a king size headboard (maybe the offset circles would work best) and saw off the legs and flip it 90 degrees and attach some sort of legs to it. The do have the overlapping squares screen for 249 on pages 24 and 25 of the catalog and there is a sort of rip off of the 3 square on page 12 for 399.
And speaking of catalogs, what has happened to Hold Everything? Its like a brand new place! the Adler Christmas stuff is a completely different change.
Hope that helps,
Todd
And yes, I realize it's different than the style you mentioned. My bad. But they do have a lot of cool stuff.
Check this out from Skymall:

Ooh the Montego one is really nice :)

The sliding panels look really cool, if you're in New York you should go check them out in store. It's 4 20" panels that hang from tracks so you can slide them to open up the room or not. Oh, and it's only 100 bucks.
They have a lot of other room dividers for less than a hundred, too, take a look.
And, although a bit steep, new at Crate & Barrel:

I was going to say the same thing. Here's a link to a pretty similar screen for $400.

ABC Carpet & Home had a similar screen to the (very nice) West Elm model, and at a surprisingly non-ABC ticket price. I think it was on their mid-century modern floor. Not sure if it was a one-of-a-kind or a stock item.
West Elm.
