Okay, here's your chance to vote how you feel about this Rope Door Stop from CSPost. We reported Wednesday that it brings a nautical vibe indoors. We like the jute rope's natural look and the 3 1/2-pound weight of the knot allows it to be used as a bookend or a door stop. But...
most readers didn't find this object's price of $42 justifiable. So, by reader demand, we've brought this to you as a Hot or Not.
See AT's other looks at rope decor before you vote: Look!: Authentic Tarred Hemp Marline Pole Wrap and How To: Wrap Your Hot Pipes with Rope. (edited from 2007-10-03 original post)
Tell us what you really think, not just about the pricetag but the design...
But... $42!?

Take the Ashley book of knots out of the library and make one yourself for the price of a length of rope at the hardware store.

$42! Puh-lease?
This is SO a DIY project since it's easy to look up knot instructions on the web. Then, 1/4" jute rope is only 20 to 40 CENTS a foot, so even if this took 20 feet of rope to make it would cost $8 before markup.
I don't even want to think about what kind of profit they are making, but if I can stop one person from being taken for a ride, then I did my good thing for today.

i agree with everyone here - could we make this into a HOT or NOT?

Hot or KNOT.
(come on, someone had to)

I have one of these. I think it came from Shabby Chic. Virtually useless as a door stop -- at least with New York metal fire doors -- but like the bookend idea.

Um, why not just use a beautiful rock, beautifully cleaned and polished? They're free, you know.

Or, maybe on ANY post, we can just have someone automatically write "Love it but (insert dollar amount here)!!??" just to get that comment out of the way. :P
Btw, C.S. Post is an AWESOME site/store. Very cool stuff.

Have you guys been reading cottage living? They feature an identical knot door stopper and also use it as a book end. Their's is from twoscompany.com and its $46.25. STILL too expensive for a ball of rope :P

easy enough to make yourself. just a typical monkeyfist knot.

Think I agree with P(2) on this one, but also, to judge from the quoted prices, there seems to be about a $5 range there. Perhaps that is the going rate and perhaps there's a reason for it as well.

How much to hire a sailor?

I actually know the answer to that one.

as promised...voted not.

I think it is totally worth $42, if you wanted one. I'd just never want one.

I hate anything that gives my home a nautical look except shirtless Marines.

I honestly thought this post was a joke. Like everyone else I think $42 is ridiculous. And nautical is really only cool if you are a 10-yr old boy.

P2, I can always count on you to make me laugh. Thanks, I needed that.

If you really love it, you can make it yourself. Search Google for "monkey fist" or monkey paw knot. Pretty easy to do

i like it. my cat would eat it.
view stephanie in orlando's profile
Then your cat would be worth $42 more! Go for it!

I like nautical things... not to the point of "theme-iness" but I like this little thang.
Not for $42, though.
(I like Danny Seo's shells on the wall too, come to think of it).

Hah... noones got this one yet:
Money for old rope.
... (I have a fluffy sock full of tiny beans as my bedroom doorstop. Works great.)

Talk about a multi-tasker! Doorstop, bookend, paperweight. With a slightly longer handle it also becomes a grab-and-go melee weapon.
