So you want to be a famous designer? We had the good fortune of spending yesterday afternoon with Harry Allen, who told us, apropos of talking about great product design skill aligning with great product design success, that the most popular product in Ikea's history was their heart pillow with arms, the Famnig Hjärta, designed by Anna Efverlund. Who would have ever thought that this 100 % polyester, $9.99 corny cushion would be a bigger seller than the Billy Bookcase, the Lack Shelf or Harry's own Kila Lamp? Harry said he knew the secret....

yes the masses are easy to please.

I don't know about the color thing. I like the pillow because of how exuberant it is Even though it only has arms and no face or other body parts, the pillow seems genuinely thrilled to see you.

huh? really? i definitely would've voted for the lack shelf, which is nearly as cheap ($15) and much more useful. AND it won't get thrown out in a year because its a cheesy tchochke.

You can't hug a LACK, nor can you make it pat your head when you're sad.

I've always thought it looks creepy. I thought everyone had a fake anglepoise type lamp from IKEA.

i love the hands! i can say if something makes me smile everytime i look at it, i'm totally compelled to buy it. I'm sure thats true for other people as well. Red rocks as well.

Bought one shortly before a breakup and it IS very comforting. I think it's the flexibility of the arms to be flung wide; makes it feel, like the others said, welcoming, accepting, happy to see you!
IKEA has great normal stuffed animals, by the way. Really good snakes, a giant spider, and a crocodile!

It makes you feel loved.

I think that saying it's success is due to it's color isn't totally accurate. It's simply a reinvention of something timeless. A heart. A hug. Such abstract ideas reflected in a simple, accessible design.
What's not to love?

Its funny the biggest selling things are so weird. At Office Depot one of the biggest selling products was the fish screensaver that we had on all our monitors. We sold those things like they were going out of style.

I'm another person who thinks they're creepy.

:-D they had them in small for a while, and i put a few of them on gifts as part of the wrapping.
i always liked it, even though i never had room for it (not much of a pillow friend).

Sorry - another stunned vote against the cushion. I think they're revolting, and creepy as hell! I can't believe they'd outsell the billy, expedit, or that godawful klippan couch.

Was given the pillow as a gift, and as a person very much against cheesy stuff, I didn't expect to keep it long. However, it is a very comfortable pillow- great lower back pillow, great neck pillow (flip it upside down and lay your head in the crook of the heart), and a great hugging pillow. I still have it.

I'm surprised I thought the billy bookcases would be number 1

I agree that the pillow is silly, but it does always seem thrilled to see you. I got one for my niece and one for myself- it still lives in the bedroom and always seems to coordinate with any bedding I put on the bed. It's just a silly goofy happy thing. Maybe it works for the silly goofy happy people in the world?

I really, really dislike it. But there are worse things in the world that are about as popular (Crocs come to mind...)
